DORIS DUKE

Originally released in 1969 on Canyon, Doris Duke‘s I’m A Loser is now considered by many to be the GREATEST DEEP SOUL ALBUM of all time. Our freshly REMASTERED CD DIGIPAK version features a BOOKLET with NEW LINER NOTES by producer Swamp Dogg (available on the Alive site for download), as well as RECENTLY UNEARTHED PHOTOS OF THE SESSION. The vinyl is a 180 GRAM pressing or RED vinyl (exclusive to Bomp-mailorder) and includes a POSTER insert. This amazing album also features Duane Allman on guitar.

A masterpiece of soul singing, song writing, and production. – FUNK MY SOUL

Though considered the finest deep soul record of all time by no less than soul expert Dave Godin, “I’m a Loser” was rejected by dozens of labels before it finally surfaced on Wally Roker’s Canyon label. Although the first single, “To the Other Woman,” cracked Billboard’s R&B Top Ten, Canyon soon spiraled into financial disaster, destroying the album’s commercial momentum. – ALL MUSIC

Doris had this great sad quality in delivering a song that could only be compared with Billie Holiday. You believe she has lived through every story on the album. – SWAMP DOGG

DREE LEER

BIRMINGHAM, AL PUNK-POP POWER TRIO DREE LEER TO RELEASE THEIR NEW STUDIO ALBUM THROW HANDS APRIL 30, 2021 VIA BETTAMAX RECORDS

With a few cymbal hits, “Want It All” – the searing leadoff track from Dree Leer‘s debut record, Throw Hands – dives headfirst into a dirge of heavily distorted guitars before increasing to a punk-tinged rocker of breakneck speed featuring hauntingly melodic vocals and lyrics about desiring more and not settling for less.

“‘Want It All’ felt like a good opener for the album; it’s usually our closer when we play live,” vocalist/guitarist Jackie Lo said. “I wanted to start off with a song that would punch you in the face. I think every person and every girl has felt this feeling of not getting enough. You’re either here 100% or you’re fucking not.”

Formed in Birmingham, AL by Lo along with friends Mandy Graffeo (bass) and Mikey D (drums), Dree Leer delivers an unhinged, heavy alternative pop sound that pays homage to the familiar sounds of the’ 90s guitar rock behemoths, but also forges its own path by injecting its songs with relevant social commentary and themes of women empowerment.

“Dree Leer was one of my online names going back to ’95,” Lo explained. “‘Leer’ means a look or a gaze and ‘Dree’ is a word that means ‘to endure something unwanted or painful.’ It speaks to what women have to endure on a regular basis. A lot of the songs are pro women having a voice and speaking out and being strong and powerful.”

Recorded, mixed and mastered by Jason Hamric with additional recording by Les Nuby and Hamric at Ol Elegante Studio, the ferocity of the band’s music is well-documented throughout Throw Hands, with nearly every song unleashing a steady barrage of noise into the listener’s ears while choruses such as “when you walk away, take your hand up off my throat” provide a template for thought-provoking themes that echo well after the final note fades. Songs like “Live Forever” – inspired by a dream of Lo’s that morphed into a rumination on legacy and love – as well as “Run Away” (a tune that takes its cue from early Radiohead) provide a vulnerable and ethereal counterbalance to the more aggressive tracks.

In addition to bringing light to issues felt by women in the 21st century, Dree Leer’s studio album and live shows work to obliterate the novelty of the “girl in a band” cliche that can plague female-fronted or female-centric acts. “I can speak my mind and play loud music. I want to be loud and not be quiet about it. It’s important for me to be a woman on stage playing guitar and singing and the music to be loud with lots of crunch and lots of fuzz and all those beautiful things that I’ve loved for so many years. I look out into the audience and I see young girls and I see them excited. I don’t want it to be weird that there’s a girl playing loud music.”

Reflective of their DIY ethic and driven by their desire to get these songs out at a speed that nearly matches their beats per minute, Dree Leer will release Throw Hands on April 30, 2021 on Bettamax Records.

DURAND JONES & THE INDICATIONS ANNOUNCE SPRING 2017 “MAKE A CHANGE” TOUR AND NEW 7″ SINGLE!

“Back in July when Durand Jones & The Indications debut album was released, we had no idea what the world would think,” explains Terry Cole from Colemine Records. “After all, the record, albeit finely crafted, was conceived in a dingy Indiana basement on a shoestring budget of 452 dollars and 11 cents (we kept receipts). They didn’t have ‘buzz.’ They didn’t have a following. They didn’t have the measured flash of more polished operations. But as the final mixes spun off of the master reel, we knew what they did have was one remarkable soul record. To our delight, the record was a smash and their no-frills LP continues to fly off the shelves.”

PREVIOUS PRESS RELEASE ANNOUNCING DURAND JONES & THE INDICATIONS 2016 SELF-TITLED DEBUT ALBUM

Bayou-born soul sensation, Durand Jones, is bringing his raw energy to Colemine Records with his debut self-titled LP. Jones brings you fiery original soul music, pairing soaring vocal work with dusty drums, slinking guitars and screaming organs.

With a stellar background in gospel, Jones got his start in the church, singing in the choir of his hometown in rural Louisiana. When his music career took him to Bloomington, Indiana, he was selected to join the legendary Indiana University Soul Revue, and it was through his involvement that he met writer/producer duo Aaron Frazer and Blake Rhein. The three began writing original soul music, recording themselves straight to tape in the basements of Bloomington – a process which brings you the gritty sounds available on Ohio-based Colemine Records.

Sure to satisfy fans of Charles Bradley, Lee Fields, Aloe Blacc and Leon Bridges.

ELEGANZA

TWIN CITIES ROCK-N-ROLL BAND ELEGANZA TO RELEASE THEIR NEW STUDIO ALBUM “WATER VALLEY HIGH” VIA DIAL BACK SOUND APRIL 29, 2022

Eleganza (photo credit: Jeff Johnson)

I don’t know the reason, or even if there’s one,” sings Brian Vanderwerf in the opening track of Eleganza’s new Water Valley High LP. Despite Brian’s undoubted place amongst underground rock’s singing MVPs, the past decade has given many in his position little reason to hustle. Love of the game? Fuck that! This is all they’ve got!

Water Valley High is the sound of a band punching its way out of a corner, once again finding ring center in a scene of royal outcasts.

Vanderwerf’s vocal tenures in The Midnight Evils (Estrus Records) and Chooglin’ (Big Legal Mess) have long established him as dirt-rock aristocracy.

Bassist Tony Zaccarid is The Twin Cities’ Midnight Mayor. Tony not only doubles as bassist for St Paul’s Romantica, but also owns popular night spot and venue Palmer’s Bar in Minneapolis.

Chooglin’ grad Jeff Johnson has done more with what Chuck Berry taught Keith Richards than anyone since Chuck Berry. Think about it.

Secret weapon Greg McAloon pins down the middle guitar with ruthless precision and the cold stare of 1,000 Minnesota winters.

Tim Baumgart, as sweet as he is big, seems unaware that it’s actually really hard to play drums as well as he does. Ever wonder what Scott Asheton playing jazz grip would sound like? Buy the record.

Latecomer (but gaining fast) Charlie Smith thinks a lot of Nicky Hopkins and puts that honky tonkin’, boogaloo sh*t on everything.

As a concept, it would suffice to say that the band has had their minds on what every American has these past five or six years: Exile On Main St. They have made their collective share of all-out hell-raising rock’n’roll albums over the past couple decades. With Eleganza, they have found a sound and rhythm where country and blue-eyed soul can coexist with the punk rock for which they’ve been known. And, with Water Valley High, Eleganza have hit their stride.

Eleganza’s Water Valley High comes out April 29th via Dial Back Sound. Click here to pre-order.

EL PERRO

PSYCH-ROCK BAND EL PERRO IS THE NEW PROJECT FROM RADIO MOSCOW’S PARKER GRIGGS | THEIR DEBUT LP HAIR OF EL PERRO DROPS JUNE 3, 2022 VIA ALIVE NATURALSOUND RECORDS

El Perro is a brand new band led by guitarist/vocalist/songwriter/producer Parker Griggs. The band’s sound contains elements that fans of his band Radio Moscow will recognize, but this is rock music with a new, fresh spin and feel. El Perro takes heavy psychedelic rock as a starting point and adds the additional instrumentation of a second guitar and a percussionist, pushing the music into more syncopated territory, spiced with Latin rhythms and hints of Funkadelic-style grooves. You could say that El Perro plays psychedelic funk rock, and you wouldn’t be wrong.

El Perro is Parker Griggs, along with former Radio Moscow drummer Lonnie Blanton, bassist Shawn Davis, guitarist Jaron Yancey and percussionist Tawny Harrington.

ENGLISHMAN

Englishman is the song-vehicle for Lexington, KY native Andrew English (The Scourge of the Sea).  From the first handcrafted EP, Taxidermy (2009), through a flurry of east-coast traveling and some handsome compliments, Englishman’s first complete album is here.

Englishman’s self-titled debut full-length was produced by Justin Craig (These United States), a long time collaborator and honorary band member.  It arrives after English and Matt Duncan (Keyboard/Vocals) spent a year sharing stages with Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Deer Tick, Vandaveer, Lost in the Trees, Frontier Ruckus, Sam Quinn, and many other fine folks.  Cut to tape in the converted barn English helped to build on a rural Ohio farm, it is at once familiar and haunted.  The ten snowy days of recording were broken up by family style meals of summer vegetables and winter toddies.  This is likely to be the coziest new album for the coming cold, and any stormy weather hereafter.

“This November, Englishman released their debut, a fantastic self-titled LP of eleven tracks. The songs are polished and consistently good, which is quite frustrating because I thought that I’d already decided the albums that were going to be on my top ten of 2010 list. English’s voice is reminiscent of a less nasal version of the great John Darnielle and the arrangements are folky with just enough production to be powerful without losing the intimacy…  this is worth your while.” – SSG MUSIC

“Warm, unassuming, golden-throated pop; former Scourge of the Sea Andrew English’s fractured fables-turned-poignant parables make playfully plaintive, happily galloping troubadour poetry. Washed in inquisitive innocence and plummeting conundrums, the cleverly cozy “Englishman” shines in simple pleasures. Refreshingly buoyant and quietly subversive.” – MAXIMUM INK MAGAZINE

“Englishman has a talent for ensconcing its words with the perfect chord here and electronic fuzz there. Cozy and accessible, Englishman gives listeners something to sink into. Beautiful melodies and lyrical delights arise at every pass, each listen yielding something new.” – MIXTAPES/HEARTBREAKS

“Andrew English shares similar vocal stylings with the likes of Samuel Beam of Iron & Wine, Ben Gibbard and even M. Ward.  His work with Englishman hasn’t changed his approach to music and it seems to be well respected in both the indie and folk communities.” – TRI-STATE INDIE

[TOP 10 BEST ALBUM OF 2010] Sounding like a combination of established troubadours Colin Meloy and John Darnielle, Andrew English is a gifted songwriter in his own right, with words that match his melodies in their remarkable depth. The album is clearly a home recording with a thin layer of white noise on the top, but still sounds carefully put together and totally void of filler. Rookie of the year.” – PAGE 43 music blog

“… a record that is wonderfully simple. It is full of sparse, minimal folk melodies and lovely harmonies offering subtle musical shades of heartbreak and enchantment in equal measure.” – THE MAD MACKEREL / UK

“…a very charming self-titled album of indie folk.” – Rob Thomas / THE CAPITAL TIMES

Thoughtful, delicate songs with a full, acoustic sound, supported by some friends to make loud, pretty pop ditties.” – PHILADELPHIA WEEKLY

“For this follow-up to last year’s EP Taxidermy, English gains competent assistance from Justin Craig’s warm, inviting, bare-necessities-only production, laid down over 10 days in a converted barn in rural Ohio. English’s voice recalls the best characteristics of The Mountain Goats’ John Darnielle and James Taylor: kind, tuneful and buoyed by distinctiveness.” – Mat Herron / LEO WEEKLY

“…a back-to-basics, Bon Iver-esque feel.” – ISTHMUS / MADISON

“This bearded folk-pop upstart and his two-man band have been opening for some big indie names lately, including Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Clem Snide and Vandaveer…. they belong in the next class of unlikely idols.”  – THE DAILY PAGE / MADISON

“English’s buttery James Taylor voice cozies up to the twinkling chimes and soft keys on “Angels And Earthworms” and the strident drums chasing “Oohs” and “Aahs” on “First Prize.” With These United States’ Justin Craig adding warm, hazy production, Englishman’s new album doesn’t immediately seize the moment, but its sturdy construction promises it will be there for you for years to come.” – THE ONION

“The album explores the same bedroom-pop soundscapes of Taxidermy but builds on those arrangements with sounder production and more complex instrumentation. English’s voice sometimes sounds like a more reigned in John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats, and his words sometimes carry a similar quirkiness. It’s his witty, stream-of-consciousness lyrics and subtle musical choices, such as the gorgeous conclusion of album opener “Planted,” that propel English’s otherwise straightforward folk-pop to new heights. Englishman is well deserving of a careful listen. – CAPTAIN OBVIOUS

“Keeping things simple can be an effective way to keep melody at the forefront, a lesson that Andrew English, frontman for this minimalist indie pop project, has learned well.  He uses simple folky instrumentation to bolster the melodies and harmonies expertly handled by the lovely vocal performances here.  Subtle and light in a world where there really does seem to be a bit too much sturm und drang.” – PIRATE CAT RADIO / SAN FRANCISCO

“Former Scourge of the Sea frontman Andrew English sequestered himself along with a few cohorts in a cabin a few hours from his native Lexington, KY over the winter in 2009 with a few instruments, an enormous tape machine and not much else. The resulting full-length is a delicate and shimmering showcase for English’s powerful voice, and an impressive first showing for English as a solo artist.” – PLAYBACK MAGAZINE

Kentucky folksters Englishman are bound to turn a lot of heads.” – Bob Marshall / PREFIX MAGAZINE

“… wonderful harmonies and heartbreaking lyrical imagery. Andrew English carries a sense of wisdom in his storytelling that helps him stand out from the flock of singer-songwriters.” – Shannon Cleary / THE RICHMOND SCENE

“Englishman’s Andrew English is a songwriter who writes in a style that reminds of old Grandaddy and All-Time Quarterback material, with a steady steam of gorgeous melody and layers of detailed sounds and beats.” – Sean Moeller / DAYTROTTER

FAMILIAR LOOKING STRANGERS

Familiar Looking Strangers grew up in the true English home of rock and roll, Liverpool, England. They played the Liverpool scene heavily in their early years including performances at the birthplace of The Beatles, The Cavern Club. Following the release of their full-length studio album Love, Hate And Heartbreak in 2012 (stream here), the group is set to release their new self-titled EP on June 10th via the Grafton, WI-based imprint KNE. The EP boasts five infectious tracks that mix Americana roots-rock and blues with British pop sensibilities, and features their new single “Saturday Night.” Having recently shared the stage with an eclectic array of great acts such as Hawkwind, Sheryl Crow, Young Dubliners and Phil Vassar, among others, The Strangers will be invading our shores later this month for a summer long tour of the U.S. in support of their new EP and will also be road-testing material from their forthcoming sophomore studio album, due later this year.

THE FLAMIN GROOVIES

CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD A RECENT HI-RES FLAMIN GROOVIES PHOTO [CREDIT: ANNE LAURENT] AND GROOVIES’ ILLUSTRATION

What started as a reunion in 2013 with tours of Japan, Australia and the UK, has continued and evolved into a full blown return in full force of the FLAMIN GROOVIES. In the past three years the band has toured the USA extensively with repeated visits to New York, L.A. and their hometown of San Francisco, as well as returning from hugely successful tours of Spain, France and Italy. In anticipation of their 50th Anniversary this year, they’ll be performing a special hometown San Fran show at The Chapel on April 7th, 2016, followed by another tour of Europe in April/May.

In addition, they’re also planning on releasing a new studio album, a documentary film, and are about to drop a new single from their forthcoming LP via Burger Records on Record Store Day (April 16, 2016). This new single features two Cyril Jordan/Chris Wilson penned tracks – the recently written “Crazy Macy” and the first track ever written by Jordan & Wilson, “Let Me Rock” recorded here for the first time! To pre-order both the 7″ vinyl and cassette singles of “Crazy Macy”/”Let Me Rock” click HERE.

In further Groovies Record Store Day news, Rhino Records will be releasing a limited Warren Zevon / Flamin Groovies “Werewolves of London” 7″ picture disc on RSD as part of their now-famous SIDE BY SIDE Series, that pairs two artists with one classic song.

The Cyril Jordan, Chris Wilson, George Alexander line-up featured on the three albums released by Sire Records, that rocked the UK, Europe and the US from 1971 – 1980 are BACK IN ACTION. With the addition of Victor Penalosa on drums, they continue to present their own unique and infectious style of rock n roll with such cult classics as “Shake Some Action,” “Slow Death” and “Teenage Head.” In addition, co-founding member Roy Loney will also be joining the Groovies for a few shows both here and abroad, where he’ll be performing a number of the Flamin Groovies’ early favorites with the band.

Grooviesb&w442

The Flamin Groovies story goes all the way back to 1965 when the band began as the Chosen Few in their hometown of San Francisco, California. After a name change and a ground-breaking self-released 10-inch EP called Sneakers, the band caught the attention of Columbia Records, who signed them and sent them into the studio with a big budget to record their first full-length album, Supersnazz, for the Epic label. Their next two albums were on Kama Sutra (home of their heroes, The Lovin’ Spoonful): Flamingo, and the now revered classic, Teenage Head.

Lead singer Roy Loney left the band at that point, and bandleader Cyril Jordan moved the group to England with Chris Wilson (formerly of Loose

Gravel) taking over as front man. They continued their style of straight-ahead guitar-driven rock ‘n’ roll, but this time with a more 60’s rather than 50’s influence. A few singles on United Artists, recorded at the legendary Rockfield Studios in Wales with Dave Edmunds producing, followed in the early 70’s. In ’76 they signed to Sire Records, who released three true gems of power pop: Shake Some Action, Flamin’ Groovies Now, and Jumpin’ In The Night.

Another lineup change ensued in the next decade with Wilson moving to England and joining the Barracudas. The Groovies continued on through the 80’s and into the early 90’s touring Australia and Europe, putting out a fine but overlooked album called Rock Juice and then finally calling it quits. Jordan formed a new band called Magic Christian while Wilson released solo albums in Europe.

Then, in 2013, Jordan, Wilson and original founding member and bass player George Alexander reunited for the first time in over thirty years. With new drummer Victor Penalosa, the foursome has not only recorded fresh new material but has also completed earlier material that has never before been captured on tape. They toured Japan and Australia, returning home to San Francisco to record and play the first of many Bay Area shows. Fans have been delighted with what is being called “a dream set list,” including original songs the band has never performed before onstage. Newcomers are asking, “Why haven’t I ever heard of this group?”

In the past couple years the band has toured the US and Europe extensively, including multiple visits to New York, LA, Cleveland, Chicago, Detroit, and Toronto. Their performance at the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame Tribute to the Rolling Stones, and co-bill with the Sonics in Brooklyn were major highlights.

It’s hard to say just why the group hasn’t gotten the attention they deserve (at least in the USA), but they’re back to give everyone another chance at hearing and seeing just why those in the know consider them one of the greatest rock n’ roll bands of all time.

The Fleshtones to release their new studio album “It’s Getting Late (…and More Songs About Werewolves)” November 1st via Yep Roc Records

In a world where there are no more heroes, The Fleshtones walk the earth like Roman gods.

It’s Getting Late (…and More Songs About Werewolves) is a smash that could have dropped at any point in The Fleshtones’ epic career — it is an outburst, and a celebration of the SUPER ROCK sound. Unlike their contemporaries, they have not dialed down the tempos to compensate for osteoporosis, they have not lost anything on their fastball, and continue to throw it for strikes. The hardest working band in garage rock has never sounded better, and now you see why they’ve been your favorite band’s favorite band for decades.

Since their inception in 1976 in Queens, New York, and their sweaty, boozy gestation at legendary venues such as CBGB, Max’s Kansas City, and the storied Club 57— recently feted at the Museum of Modern Art, where their proto-video underground film “Soul City” was unspooled for art stars, glitterati, and a raft of punk rockers who managed to get past the front gate — they have perpetrated their proprietary brand of SUPER ROCK, a frenetic amalgam of garage punk and soul, punctuated by the big beat and unleashed with the spectacular show business majesty which has kept them on the road for over forty years, adored by audiences whose love for them borders on religious fervor.

The Fleshtones’ SUPER ROCK sound literally defines American Beat Music, and they have delivered their message with evangelistic passion, always skirting the edges of the mainstream without pandering to any obvious fad or trend. They have appeared on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand TV show; charismatic frontman Peter Zaremba was a host on MTV’s original late-night alternative broadcast The Cutting Edge; and they were the last band to publicly perform at the World Trade Center’s Windows on the World, a society gig by any standard. Always true to their school, they have flags planted in the old world and the new — they appeared with Andy Warhol on his short-lived talk show Andy Warhol’s Fifteen Minutes, and throughout the mid-1980s they regularly played at the Pyramid Club on Avenue A in New York’s storied East Village, and were instrumental in helping to start Wigstock, the drag queen festival that has become an outrageously vibrant part of the New York City experience.

Never as obviously demented nor self-consciously “psycho” as the Cramps (with whom they shared a rehearsal space in 1977), the Fleshtones could also be found after dark basking in the sick blue light of their television sets, watching late-night horror movies and basking in the weirdness of America, while simultaneously soaking up the on-stage outrages of the Rat Pack, Little Richard, and the Rolling Stones, honing their own live show into an explosive, frenzied manifesto of rock’n’roll gone right.

They routinely tour Spain, where fans make pilgrimages to their shows, and they are equally heralded in Scandinavia, in Italy, and in France, where they have toured incessantly. All over the world — and especially in New York City, the most fickle of towns — younger bands look up to The Fleshtones for lessons in suave stagecraft and unforced enthusiasm. They bring the brio of Chuck Berry and James Brown, with whom they have shared the stage with many times, and the true spirit of CBGB.

In fact, they are the only band who played at CBGB in 1976 to have never taken a significant break from recording or performing since, and their line-up has been remarkably stable, anchored by Zaremba — wildly swinging, funny, uncompromised, and confident, he is equal parts Dean Martin, Mick Jagger, and Count Dracula — and SUPER ROCK guitarist Keith Streng, who seemingly flies through the air. They are backed by one of the most solid rhythm sections in the world, the decidedly Charlie Watts less-is-more-but-do-it-with-panache drumming of Bill Milhizer, who’s held the chair for forty years, and newcomer Ken Fox on bass, who has served for a mere thirty. Previously, those spots had been filled my luminary mercenaries with pedigree, including Clem Burke from Blondie on drums, and Fred Smith (Television) and Andy Shernoff (the Dictators) on bass, testimony to the Fleshtones OG punk rock roots and authenticity in a world run over by poseurs and off-the-rack frauds.

The Fleshtones were always oddly evolved in a plasma pool of retrograde wannabes — this is a band that promises a party of the least-juvenile sort. And that is why they have proudly worn the SUPER ROCK title since they came howling and gyrating out of the gate. They are the rare thing, like the Grand Canyon – no matter how great you have been told they are, when you finally get to see them for yourself, it is actually much better than any hype.

Evel Knievel once told me that “American hero” is the shortest lived of all professions. The Fleshtones are here to tell everyone he was wrong. The Fleshtones stand tall as the last real thing in America.

The Fleshtones’ new album “It’s Getting Late (…and More Songs About Werewolves)” will be available on vinyl, CD and DSPs on November 1st via Yep Roc Records.

THE FLYING STARS OF BROOKLYN, NY

“My God Has A Telephone” is the debut solo single from The Flying Stars of Brooklyn NY, a deep-soul band led by Aaron Frazer of Durand Jones & The Indications. Aaron’s super sweet, silvery falsetto was featured on “Is It Any Wonder?” on The Indications’ debut LP, but the drummer steps out here with some low-down gospel soul with some help from friends including Eli Paperboy Reed.

Aaron’s previous song, “Is It Any Wonder?” has been the subject of several sync licenses, including the Netflix-original series Easy, Friends From College and Gypsy, as well as the upcoming films The Long Dumb Road and Piercing.

The Flying Stars of Brooklyn NY’s new single “My God Has A Telephone” backed with “Live On” will be available on limited 7” vinyl 45s, digital and streaming formats on October 20th via Colemine Records.

FOX & THE BIRD

CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD HI-RES FOX & THE BIRD BAND PHOTOS & DARKEST HOURS ALBUM ART

A folk-pop band with gang vocals and layered harmonies, Fox and the Bird is a choral collective of rotating songwriters and singers. The band’s characteristically rich, up-beat orchestration is hitched to banjos, accordions, ukuleles & fiddles to form the foundation of a sound reminiscent of hard times and high hopes.

Fox & The Bird’s latest album, Darkest Hours, is a sorrowfully appropriate title for an unapologetically bare-bones, brutally honest folk album. From lyrics chronicling the confusion of lost love in “Ashes” and “Bend” to commentary on the darkly violent tendencies seen in human nature as presented in “Habit” and “Valley,” the album laments hardship, poverty, death, loss… those moments in life when the darkness seems most impenetrable.

But while Darkest Hours is a heavy follow-up to the band’s debut Floating Feather, lyrically, their characteristic rich, up-beat orchestration carries us through the darkness with an innate sort of joy and hints at the light that inevitably follows even our darkest of hours.

Fox and the Bird continues to produce and self-release its albums, touring and always committed to music that is made on back porches, in living rooms and on the streets. Darkest Hours is set for release January 14th, and will be available on vinyl, CD and digital formats.

HERE’S WHAT PEOPLE HAVE BEEN SAYING ABOUT FOX & THE BIRD:

“…a wide range of instrumentation and a beautiful, organic sound…” — Pete Freedman, Dallas Observer

“What is this hope I hear on their voices? Even when singing songs of heartbreak, there is an ever-present optimism and peace about them. They sing of home, and I feel at home.” — Sarah Crisman, Pegasus News

“Fox and the Bird, a band with wonderfully layered Americana-flamenco-folk harmonies.” — Joy Tipping, Dallas Morning News

“Local beloveds Fox and the Bird take their straightforward folk sensibility and throw it in a blender on high with beautiful melodies and sing-along, foot-stomping tunes.” — Rachel Watts, Dallas Observer

“Combining mellow voices and a variety of instruments, Fox & the Bird delivers mesmerizing performances that possess a mystique and style that defy musical formula.” — Star Community News

“Lyrics are reminiscent of the macabre and imaginative, of folk music by Welsh immigrants to Appalachia.” — Lucinda Breeding, Denton Record Chronicle

“[Fox and The Bird’s songs] bloom most fully in concert, where the full-throated, multi-part harmonies can reach full roar and the intoxicating clatter behind them blows forth like a summer wind sweeping through the tall grain”– Preston Jones, DFW.com

“Fox and the Bird believe in music as orthopraxy: self-subsisting and without boundaries.” — Dick Sullivan, D Magazine

“Loosely fitting under the vintage umbrella of neo-folk, this well-thought-out group of tunes boasts a variety that never seems cobbled together by force. Instead, a spirit of unity between the album’s sonic traits and the group’s comfort with the material shines powerfully.” — Kelly Dearmore, Dallas Observer

CRACKER’S NEW DOUBLE-ALBUM “BERKELEY TO BAKERSFIELD” DROPS 12/9!

WINTER TOUR IN SUPPORT OF “BERKELEY TO BAKERSFIELD” KICKS-OFF NOV. 28TH IN TAMPA!

This December Cracker will be releasing their tenth studio effort, entitled Berkeley To Bakersfield, a double-album that finds this uniquely American band traversing two different sides of the California landscape – the northern Bay area and further down-state in Bakersfield.

Despite being less than a five-hour drive from city to city, musically, these two regions couldn’t be further apart from one another. In the late ‘70s and ‘80s a harder-edged style of rock music emerged from the Bay area, while Bakersfield is renowned for its own iconic twangy country music popularized, most famously, by Buck Owens and Merle Haggard in the ‘60s and ‘70s. Yet despite these differences, they are both elements that Cracker’s two cofounders, David Lowery and Johnny Hickman, have embraced to some degree on nearly every one of their studio albums over the last two decades. On Berkeley To Bakersfield, however, instead of integrating these two genres together within one disc, they’ve neatly compartmentalized them onto their own respective regionally-titled LPs.

As Lowery explains, “On the Berkeley disc the band is the original Cracker lineup – Davey Faragher, Michael Urbano, Johnny and myself. This is the first time this lineup has recorded together in almost 20 years. We began recording this album at East Bay Recorders in Berkeley, CA. For this reason we chose to stylistically focus this disc on the music we most associate with the East Bay: Punk and Garage with some funky undertones. To further match our sense of place we often took an overtly political tone in the lyrics.”

“This Bakersfield disc represents the ‘California country’ side of the band. Throughout the band’s 24-year history we’ve dabbled in Country and Americana but this time we wanted to pay homage to the particular strain of Country and Country-Rock music that emerges from the inland valleys of California.”

Cracker has been described as a lot of things over the years: alt-rock, Americana, insurgent-country, and have even had the terms punk and classic-rock thrown at them. But more than anything Cracker are survivors. Cofounders Lowery and Hickman have been at it for almost a quarter of a century – amassing ten studio albums, multiple gold records, thousands of live performances, hit songs that are still in current radio rotation around the globe (“Low,” “Euro-Trash Girl,” “Get Off This” and “Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out With Me” to name just a few), and a worldwide fan base – that despite the major sea-changes within the music industry – continues to grow each year.

Cracker’s Berkeley To Bakersfield will be released December 9, 2014 via 429 Records and will be available on CD and digital formats.

GA-20

GA-20 photo (photo: Jon Medina)

GA-20’S NEW STUDIO ALBUM “CRACKDOWN” JUST DEBUTED AT THE #1 SPOT ON BILLBOARD’S BLUES ALBUMS CHART THIS WEEK (SEP. 19, 2022)! THIS IS THEIR THIRD CONSECUTIVE RELEASE THAT HAS TOPPED THIS CHART!

IN ADDITION, THE BLUES TRIO’S “CRACKDOWN” LP IS #1 THIS WEEK ON THE NACC TOP 30 BLUES CHART!

GA-20 clearly is on to something big. It’s a movement, a new traditional blues revival. The dynamic, throwback blues trio are disciples of the place where traditional blues, country and rock ‘n’ roll intersect. “We make records that we would want to listen to,” says guitarist Matt Stubbs. “It’s our take on the song-based traditional electric blues we love.” Stubbs, guitarist/vocalist Pat Faherty, and drummer Tim Carman have been at the forefront of this traditional blues revival since they first formed in 2018. It’s no wonder they skyrocketed to the top of the Billboard Blues Chart.

According to Stubbs, “Since we started the band we’ve focused on the story, the melody, and on creating a mood. Playing live as much as we do, we’re finding more and more that people are discovering how cool it all is. Traditional country, soul and funk music have all had these massive recent revivals, but traditional blues so far has not.” With their new Colemine album, Crackdown, and an intensive tour schedule, that’s all about to change.

On Crackdown, GA-20’s third full-length release, the band creates an unvarnished, ramshackle blues that is at once traditional and refreshingly modern. Expanding on their previous releases (2019’s Lonely Soul and 2021’s Try It…You Might Like It! GA-20 Does Hound Dog Taylor) GA-20 finds inspiration on the edges of the genre, where early electric blues first converged with country and rock ‘n’ roll. The album’s nine original songs include the loping, Louisiana-flavored “Dry Run,” the dirty, and bare-bones “Easy On The Eyes” and the melodic, garage-tinged “Fairweather Friend.” With tight, propulsive performances and a brevity and punk energy reminiscent of The Ramones, Crackdown is rowdy and fun, filled with instantly memorable, and well-crafted songs.

GA-20’s Crackdown is out now on vinyl, CD and digital/streaming platforms via Karma Chief Records. Click here to order.

Click here to download a new hi-res band photo of GA-20 (credit: Fancey Pansen) and GA-20 Does Hound Dog Taylor: Try It… You Might Like It! album cover art

GA-20’S NEW STUDIO ALBUM “GA-20 DOES HOUND DOG TAYLOR: TRY IT… YOU MIGHT LIKE IT!” OUT AUGUST 20, 2021!

A TRIBUTE TO HOUND DOG TAYLOR FROM COLEMINE RECORDS’ IMPRINT KARMA CHIEF RECORDS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH ALLIGATOR RECORDS!

GA-20 HITS THE ROAD THIS FALL FOR MASSIVE U.S. TOUR CO-HEADLINING WITH JD SIMO! (TOUR DATES BELOW)

Blues music is revered for its timelessness. The best blues – no matter how old – sounds as fresh and visceral today as it did when first recorded. The high-energy electric blues trio GA-20 – guitarist Matt Stubbs, guitarist/vocalist Pat Faherty, and drummer Tim Carman – know this well. Since first forming in 2018, GA-20 has drawn inspiration for their primal, original music from late 1950s/early 1960s blues, R&B and rock ‘n’ roll. They use rare and vintage gear (including at times the famed Gibson GA-20 amplifier for which the band is named), creating powerfully raw, driving music that is at once traditional and refreshingly modern. The band’s dynamic self-penned songs sound and feel as fresh and real as the old blues they love and perform, including songs by Otis Rush, J.B. Lenoir, Howlin’ Wolf, Junior Wells and especially their favorite, Hound Dog Taylor. According to Stubbs, “Not enough people know just how cool Hound Dog Taylor was.”

Legendary six-fingered Chicago bluesman Theodore Roosevelt “Hound Dog” Taylor always knew how he wanted to be remembered, declaring, “When I die they’ll say, ‘he couldn’t play shit, but he sure made it sound good!’” His first full length recording in 1971 was also the first album on now world-famous Alligator Records, Hound Dog Taylor & The HouseRockers. In fact, label president Bruce Iglauer founded Alligator for the sole purpose of recording and releasing that album. Fifty years later, Hound Dog Taylor & The HouseRockers is considered a classic of the genre, and Alligator boasts a catalog of over 350 blues and roots rock releases. With Taylor on wild slide guitar, Brewer Phillips picking out the bass notes on his beat-up Telecaster guitar, and Ted Harvey driving the beat at breakneck speed, the band – playing their second-hand instruments through third-hand amps – made a loud, fast and joyful noise. Famed critic Robert Christgau referred to them as “the Ramones of the blues.” At the time, Iglauer figured, “If I love this band and this music so much, everyone else will love them too.”

Now, Colemine Records – working in partnership with Alligator Records – will release GA-20’s new full-length album, GA-20 Does Hound Dog Taylor: Try It…You Might Like It!, featuring 10 songs written or performed by the Chicago blues legend. From the fiery first single and album opener She’s Gone to the blistering Sadie to the all-time Hound Dog classic Give Me Back My Wig, GA-20 deliver one electrifying track after another. According to Stubbs, “We feel a strong connection to the unique setup of two guitars and drums with no bass, and we all have massive appreciation of Hound Dog’s raw and no-frills sound. It’s essentially what we try to do as a band.”

With 2021 marking the 50th anniversary of both Alligator Records and Hound Dog Taylor & The HouseRockers, the timing for GA-20 to record these songs seemed perfect. With the pandemic shutdown and tour dates postponed, the band was ready for something new. As fate would have it, Iglauer, not knowing the band was under exclusive contract, approached Stubbs about a potential project with Alligator. Since GA-20 was already committed to Colemine, the idea to work together with Alligator on this album was born. Alligator continues its 50th anniversary celebration by working with GA-20 and Colemine Records to present a new album of Hound Dog Taylor’s music, while the band gives their fans some of the most raw and honest performances imaginable with Try It…You Might Like It!

According to Colemine Records owner Terry Cole, Try It…You Might Like It! is a natural fit for both labels. “Teaming up with Alligator for this release feels like a perfect pairing! Alligator was created to give Hound Dog Taylor a home, and over the last 50 years, the label has established itself as a perennial winner in the blues world. With GA-20, we’re really excited about applying some of the old-school production techniques found on most of our soul records to the blues genre. Using just a few mics and recording live, all together in one room, is really what makes so many classic blues, soul, and R&B records so special!”

Alligator’s Iglauer is thrilled to be working with the band. “GA-20 absolutely glory in the rough-edged, unvarnished Chicago blues of Hound Dog Taylor & The HouseRockers. GA-20 are among the very few artists who have captured the band’s raw essence. Hound Dog would be proud that they are delivering his music so well. They rock the house!”

Heading into the recording session for Try It…You Might Like It!, the plan was to keep everything as true to the way Hound Dog recorded as possible. Stubbs spoke to Iglauer on several occasions to get info on those early sessions and for the details of the guitars and amps that Hound Dog and Brewer used. Stubbs explains, “Pat and I searched out four 1960’s Teisco/Kingston guitars to find the one with the closest tone to Hound Dog’s original, and Pat used a vintage 1960’s Silvertone amp – the same as Hound Dog. I used a vintage Telecaster and vintage Fender amp like Brewer Phillips played.” They tracked the songs in under two days, live, all in one room, and in no more than three takes per song, just as Hound Dog Taylor & The HouseRockers did. Stubbs continues, “Our essential goal was to capture the spirit and vibe of Hound Dog Taylor & The HouseRockers and (Hound Dog’s second album) Natural Boogie, and I believe we did just that.”

According to Stubbs, “Some music is more than just music, it comes with a feeling. To me, Hound Dog was raw and visceral, and all of these things that really appeal to me and that I try to bring to my own approach on guitar. It was an exciting challenge to try to embody that on this record, in playing and production.” Guitarist Faherty agrees, saying, “Hound Dog is everything I want to be in blues. No one else today even comes close.” And Carman still can’t get enough of that drum sound. “In my opinion, Ted Harvey is one of the most underrated and underappreciated drummers of all time. I learned a lot from studying Harvey’s playing, especially the way he interacted with Brewer and Hound Dog while still maintaining a driving groove. His ride cymbal playing was one of a kind.”

Matt Stubbs is a 12-year veteran (and still a member) of blues master Charlie Musselwhite’s touring band. He’s performed with James Cotton and John Hammond, among many others. Faherty played rock and metal guitar until he was bitten by the blues bug. The two met in Boston, and their mutual love of traditional electric blues, R&B, and rock ‘n’ roll led them to write, perform and eventually record their modern vision of this life-altering music. Upon forming in 2018, GA-20 quickly began to draw a following, and the band soon signed with acclaimed soul/R&B label Colemine Records, releasing their debut, Lonely Soul, in 2019 to widespread critical and popular acclaim. The album premiered in the #2 position on the Billboard Blues Chart. Their EP Live Vol. 1 seemingly came out of nowhere to debut at #1 a year later. Medium.com declared, “This is the kind of music that travels through time while taking from the era where it was born and turning it into something fresh. Dirty and raw…timeless and modern.”

GA-20 hit the road hard, performing live at every opportunity, earning new fans at every club, concert hall and festival they played from coast to coast. Now with GA-20 Does Hound Dog Taylor: Try It…You Might Like It!, GA-20 unleashes this timeless, down and dirty music, making it breathe and live as forcefully today as it did back when Hound Dog Taylor was spitting fire. Alligator’s Iglauer says, “No one made a more wonderfully glorious racket than Hound Dog, Brewer Phillips and Ted Harvey.” GA-20 certainly comes close, as the racket made by Matt Stubbs, Pat Faherty and Tim Carman is also pretty damn glorious. “Ultimately,” says Stubbs, “we think Hound Dog fans and blues fans will love this record, and we’re proud to bring his sound to a new audience.” – Marc Lipkin

GA-20’s Matthew Stubbs & Pat Faherty (photo credit: Rosie Coche)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GA-20 was formed by friends Pat Faherty and Matthew Stubbs in Boston, MA in 2018. The project was born out of their mutual love of heavy traditional Blues, R&B, and Rock & Roll of the late ’50s and early ’60s. Faherty and Stubbs bonded over legendary artists like Lazy Lester, J.B. Lenoir, Earl Hooker, Buddy Guy, Otis Rush and Junior Wells. Feeling a void in current music, the duo have set out to write, record and perform a modern version of this beloved art form. Live, GA-20 is a trio of 2 guitars, vocals and drums. Raw, passionate and honest performance – both on stage and in the studio – is the only goal.
Stubbs has spent the past 11 years as guitarist for Blues legend Charlie Musselwhite. During that time he has also backed up and toured with such Blues giants as John Hammond, James Cotton, Junior Watson and James Harman. Stubbs also leads his own original instrumental psych-rock band, The Antiguas.
THE GABBARD BROTHERS
From the ashes of the acclaimed Ohio rock band Buffalo Killers, singers/songwriters/siblings Zachary and Andy Gabbard have re-emerged as The Gabbard Brothers. And while there are still similarities to their previous band, with nods to greats like Neil Young, James Gang and Buffalo Springfield, there’s a hazier, organic, earthy-psych vibe running through the brothers’ new music.
Fresh from their Black Keys tour (Zachary and Andy are current bassist and guitarist, respectively, in the Keys’ expanded tour group), The Gabbard Bros. recently released their debut single “Sell Your Gun Buy A Guitar” via Colemine Records’ imprint Karma Chief, which CityBeat music editor Mike Breen called a “great ’60s-flavored pop nugget.”
Now the duo has just released their follow-up single ‘Too Much To Feel’ – a musical middle finger to the bigots, racists and folks holding on to an old, outdated way of thinking. This new single will be included in their forthcoming debut studio album, out later this year.
The Gabbard Brothers’ new single “Too Much To Feel” is out now on digital and streaming platforms via Karma Chief Records. Click here to order.
GARDENS
Raised on a diet of Terrence Mckenna,The Beatles, Syd Barrett, Nirvana and Turkish psychedelic music, GARDENS is part of the new sound of Detroit. Formed by Matthew Mueller, Jeffrey Thomas, Julian Spradlin and Vincent Mazzola, they have already released a couple of singles and cassettes, and toured the country, sharing the stage with the likes of Brimstone Howl, Thee Oh Sees, Detroit Cobras, Akron Family and Tyvek, to name just a few. GARDENS is their debut album, produced and engineered by Chris Koltay (Akron Family, Dirtbombs, SSM) at High Bias recordings.
GARDENS is in-stores now through Alive Records on CD, Ltd. Edition GREEN VINYL WITH DIGITAL DOWNLOAD and digital formats.
”Gardens, a wonderfully psychedelic band from sorrowful Detroit, make crunchy guitar rock that has all the grit and attitude of their hometown.”  – RCRD LBL
“A solid set of high-octane garage that’s unexpectedly good. It’s a vintage sound – listening to this makes me want to dig out my Pebbles compilations – but whereas so many contemporary bands trying to recapture that 60’s vibe sound forced, Gardens are truly in the spirit of it all; wonky, exuberant and above all, varied. No two songs sound alike, with changes of pace and style aplenty. There’s a real sense that Gardens are striving to push their own musical limits and are doing it for the enjoyment of making music, regardless of retro / revisionary trends. – Christopher Nosnibor / WHISPERIN & HOLLERIN / UK
“An engaging listen… Gardens ends up being pretty much all you need from a debut; an attempt to find a unique sound, a handful of sticky tunes, a bunch of energy and fun.”  – Tim Sendra / ALL MUSIC
“This is the manna for which garage junkies live. Gardens loves the sound of dirty-unto-naughtiness guitars so well, it indulges in them often. Vocals rival the adolescent swagger of Richard Hell and Rick Froberg.” – Mary Leary / MY OLD KENTUCKY BLOG
“There are obvious nods in the direction of Syd Barrett, Velvet Underground and The Beatles but this is their own take on a quite familiar psychedelic rock sound.” – BARRYGRUFF / UK
“With jangly guitars and off-key vocals Gardens make it work… the melodies are simple, the tunes are catchy in a subtle way and it all combines together for some fun songs” – MAXIMUM ROCKNROLL
“ Gardens are the latest in the long line of garage bands to come swaggering out of Detroit – and they don’t let the side down. ‘Maze Time’ is the advance track from their forthcoming self-titled debut album and it is a cracker. While in some ways it feels like it could easily have been plucked from the halcyon days of 60s psychedelia with its bluesy feel and swirling chorus lines, there are also traces of early 70s punk attitude and even a soupçon of Motown style sweetness as well. Put those ingredients all together with wit and imagination as the band most certainly have done and the final result gives the song enough identity to stand-up and snarl all on its own” – THE MAD MACKEREL
“It’s hard to believe that this band is from the 21st century. The guitars, drums and vocals hit with grit and attitude that gleans influence from great bands of the 60’s and 70’s, such as The Beatles and The Stooges. The shifting structure of the record reinforces the psychedelic, unique, punk-rock sounds that Gardens so effortlessly create.”  – Laura Williams / THE MUSICAL VIEW
“It’s bluesy guitar rock that is at times as sugary as Motown, at others as aggressive as Iggy Pop.”  – BLOOD, DIRT & ANGELS
GHOST FUNK ORCHESTRA
NYC PSYCH ENSEMBLE GHOST FUNK ORCHESTRA TO RELEASE THEIR NEW STUDIO ALBUM ‘AN ODE TO ESCAPISM’ NOVEMBER 13, 2020 VIA COLEMINE RECORDS’ IMPRINT KARMA CHIEF RECORDS
Where will you hide when the world around you is closing in? On their latest LP, An Ode To Escapism, Ghost Funk Orchestra invites you to close your eyes and take a dive into your subconscious. Strings and horns float around from ear to ear while their three sirens explore themes of isolation, fear of the unknown, and the fabrication of self-image. It’s a soulful psychedelic journey that picks up sonically where A Song For Paul left off. The drums are heavier, the arrangements are more intricate, and the vocal harmonies soar over a bed of odd time signature grooves. This is an album that’s meant to be listened to in the dark. So won’t you join them? You’re not scared… are you?
Ghost Funk Orchestra are a mystery. Plain and simple. Dirty, soulful production, verbed and fuzzed out guitars, mysterious vocals that feel like a lost score to a Quentin Tarantino film. GFO is the brainchild of composer/multi-instrumentalist Seth Applebaum. What started as a one-man recording project has now evolved into a 10-piece powerhouse live band. It’s a sonic kaleidoscope that defies genre specification, but draws heavy influence from the worlds of soul, psych rock, salsa, and beyond. Now, coming off of their highly regarded 2019 release A Song For Paul, GFO is ready to unleash their new follow-up LP, An Ode To Escapism, to be released November 13th on Karma Chief Records.
“… some of the most groovy music around.” – Earmilk
“The band forges new territory with a style full of mystery, fuzz and reverb.” – Jazziz
“… so much more than just another large-scaled soulful-funky thing.” – The Vinyl District
