TVD Video Premiere: Lonesome Shack, “No Way Back”

BY ROGER CATLIN | JUNE 6, 2019

Authenticity is a rarity, which may be why the American blues trio Lonesome Shack have been enjoying some attention since they moved to the UK. Not that they’re from the American South or anything, but rather the Pacific Northwest. Still, the trio of Ben Todd, drummer Kristian Garrard, and bassist Luke Bergman kicks up a tasty, boomy, atmospheric sound, as they do once more for their new video “No Way Back.”

The clip, which we are proud to unveil today at The Vinyl District, is something inauthentic, however—an entire video shot backwards but choreographed to look like it’s going forward. The hint comes only at the oddest visual surprises, from the turquoise hat jumping into his hand, an umbrella that seems to attract streams of water, or in what looks to be erasing a painting with a paint brush. Todd’s own quirky gait and movement amid his studio in industrial East London may be a tipoff as well.

What doesn’t give it away, though, is Todd’s achievement in lip syncing the entire song, in one continuous shot, entirely backwards as well. How do you memorize those movements to make them look convincing? How many takes did it take? Only one, according to the slate that should begin the clip, but of course instead ends it.

Todd learned his blues and banjo licks while living in a shack in the New Mexico desert, an experience that led to the band name and a lyric in the video: “I had my time in a lonesome shack / I made up my mind, I can’t go back.” Todd says that the song “started with a photograph I took in Norway of some animal tracks that crossed a snowy field and disappeared into the woods.”

Todd, who looks like a mischievous Crispin Glover in the video, is making his directorial debut with the work. “I wanted to challenge perception of space and time to illuminate the ideas of the song,” he says. It’s one of the first uses of the Cooke Anamorphic Special Flare lenses in a music video shot in the UK.

Instead of going backwards, the trio moves forward with a European tour this month, beginning in London at The Garage June 22 and continuing to the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, and France through July 6.

“No Way Back” is from the recent album Desert Dreams, out in a variety of formats—including limited edition starburst vinyl—from Alive Naturalsound Records.

NEW NOISE MAGAZINE PREMIERES DATURA4’S NEW TRACK “CAT ON A ROOF”

Song Premiere: Datura4 – “Cat on a Roof”

We’re pleased to bring you the premiere of Datura4’s new song “Cat on a Roof” (listen below). The track is taken from the band’s forthcoming album Blessed is the Boogie, which is scheduled to be released through Alive Naturalsound Records.

Dom Mariani of Datura4 commented on the song:

‘Cat on a Roof’ was one of 3 songs recorded during the final sessions for the new record. We’d been forced to take a break after the departure of Greg Hitchcock and reconvened some months later as a three piece to work on new material and complete the record.

It gave us a chance to re-evaluate things and it also marks the introduction of keyboards to the line-up which has brought a new and exciting dimension to our sound.

‘Cat on a Roof’ is mining new horizons.

About the band:

Blessed is the Boogie is the eagerly anticipated third album by Western Australian rockers Datura4.

Fronted by Aussie legend Dom Mariani, who came to prominence on the music scene in the 1980s with legendary garage rock combo The Stems, and later went on to form revered power pop outfits DM3 and The Someloves, Datura4 is Mariani’s return to his blues and heads-down, full-tilt boogie roots.

Blessed is the Boogie is ten new songs that build on Datura4’s ‘guitars to infinity’ approach of Hairy Mountain (2016) and the hard rocking, progressive blues and psychedelic stylings of debut LP Demon Blues (2015). Both albums were released through Alive NaturalSound Records and gained critical acclaim at home, in Europe and the USA.

Datura4 are stoked to share with you this new collection of songs.

“Boom boom boom boom – Blessed is the Boogie.”

SONG PREMIERE

BAYLEN’S BRIT PICK: LONESOME SHACK

By Baylen Leonard

Artist: Lonesome Shack

Hometown: London via Seattle

Latest Album: Desert Dreams (March 1)

Sounds Like: The Black Keys, The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band, Rayland Baxter

Why You Should Listen: Lonesome Shack moved to London from rainy Seattle, so you imagine they feel right at home with the British weather. Desert Dreams, their third album, is the kind of music that promises to warm you up from the inside out: the perfect thing to listen to when Storm Erik is battering at your door and the UK papers are predicting a snowbomb. If you like a bit of blues–of the hill country or desert variety–-mixed with some backwoods boogie and a dash of psychedelia, then Desert Dreams is for you. (Check out the BGS premiere of the title track at the end of the story.)

Ben Todd (the fingerpicking frontman of the trio) was clearly dreaming of warmer climes when he wrote these songs last winter. Perhaps he was thinking back to the early 2000s, when he spent four years living in a shack he’d built himself in the Gila wilderness in New Mexico. It was there he taught himself to play blues tunes from old recordings while living off the land. In the years since he’s honed his unique sound with the help of drummer (and graphic designer) Kristian Garrard and bassist Luke Bergman.

It should be said that, while honouring the past, this record sounds as bright as a new penny. That about sums up the feel of this recording: planted in yesteryear but cultivated firmly in the now. I for one will have it on standby to see me through the inevitable four months of winter we still have to come, before the London sunshine shows up for about a week. The album doesn’t drop until the 1st of March – but I can’t see springtime reaching us before then.

Speaking about the title track, Ben Todd says, “I wrote this album in sequence and ‘Desert Dreams’ was the last song I wrote. I see it as a postscript to the album, with a different feel, a dreamy lightheartedness. In the studio we had never played this song before as a band and after we ran through it a few times we recorded this live, first take. It tells the story of a dream sequence that touches on fears of ‘desertification’ that you hear about in the Southwest US where fertile land becomes useless after human impact plays its course, but in this case it’s an imagined city that fills up with sand. I worked at an adobe brick manufacturer in New Mexico and most of my job entailed shoveling sand and clay proportionately into a cement mixer to be poured into brick forms. Memories of this show up in the song: ‘I dreamed I was digging clay’ and ‘It takes sand and clay to begin to build the city up again.’ The chorus is an adapted quote from the book The Quick and the Dead by the great southwestern writer Joy Williams.”

GLIDE MAGAZINE PREMIERES BOHANNONS’ NEW TRACK “SLEEP ROCK”

Click here to listen to Bohannons’ new single “Sleep Rock” via Glide Magazine

SONG PREMIERE: BOHANNONS REMEMBER THE GOOD TIMES WITH HARD-CHARGING “SLEEP ROCK”

In 2006 Chattanooga rock and rollers the Bohannons would set out on their first American tour, retracing their steps year after year and setting off in new directions all the while. What would start as archaic recording processes would eventually bring them to some of the most well-known studios in the country, from Electrical Audio in Chicago to Chase Park Transduction in Athens, GA and on to Dialback Sound in Water Valley, Ms.

Every album from 2010’s Days of Echo to 2015’s Luminary Angels is an invitation to listen and look into both the blessings and burdens of the working class south. The framework of the titles dare to encompass the best of rock, blues, country, power pop, punk and metal.

On April 5th the band will release their new LP Bloodroot on Cornelius Chapel Records. Frontman Marty Bohannon cites the album as being “inspired by our home, family, friends, and this indelible planet. The songs are vignettes of this wild journey we are on which is never short of high nor low, and never lacking in love and spirit.”

Today Glide is excited to premiere “Sleep Rock”, one of the standout tracks on Bloodroot. The song is a raw chunk of rough and tumble Southern punk rock that is sang from the heart. The band lays into hard-charging riffs and grooves while Bohannon sings his freakin’ heart out as he reflects on life after that piece of shit Donald Trump won the electoral vote and started driving this country straight to hell. Bohannon has angst in his voice as he almost seems to be begging us to go back to a time when hate and division didn’t define every moment. Of course, there is plenty of guitar shredding, but “Sleep Rock” shows the Bohannons as one of the great underrated crafters of songs.

Marty Bohannon describes the inspiration behind the song:

“This is my ode to everyone that slept on the 2016 Presidential election. Every day for the last two years I feel like I’m in a dream-like state – a stress dream. Stranger than fiction. In some parallel universe things are on course. This song is a map to get back there. We can right the wrongs somehow. The narrator says ‘don’t accept this,’ remember the good times and go back.”

Bohannons’ Bloodroot will be available on vinyl, CD, digital and streaming formats on April 5th via Cornelius Chapel Records.

HOLIDAY GUNFIRE NEW SINGLE EXCLUSIVE!

By Gerry Ranson

New Birmingham, Alabama band HOLIDAY GUNFIRE are about to drop their debut album and they’re premiering a new single from it exclusively with Vive Le Rock!

‘Fake It’ is taken from the self-titled album which is due out through Cornelius Chapel Records on Friday 15 February.

Led by Lester Nuby III, formerly of much-loved 90s garage rockers VERBENA, Holiday Gunfire were formed two years ago, bringing together the cream of Birmingam underground rock, namely Jason Hamric, Craig Ceravolo and Michael Williams, in a band the traces the grand trajectory of American blue-collar post-punk, alighting on the likes of Sugar, Buffalo Tom and Fugazi.

Speaking about the new single, Hamric says, “‘Fake it’ is that inner dialog you have when there is every reason in the world to call someone out on their shit, but your empathy kicks in. You remember your own flaws and you let it go… secretly hoping the universe takes care of them for you!”

GLIDE MAGAZINE PREMIERES ARDENT SONS’ NEW TRACK “BLACK MAGIC”!

Click here to listen to Ardent Sons’ new track “Black Magic” via Glide Magazine

SONG PREMIERE: FLAMIN’ GROOVIES DRUMMER TONY T. SALES GETS SOULFUL AS ARDENT SONS ON “BLACK MAGIC”

Ardent Sons is a rock and roll band from Oakland, California, fronted by Flamin’ Groovies drummer Tony T. Sales. Their songs explore classic themes of love and loss, travels between broken homes and shaky relationships, and redemption in life’s near-forgotten moments. Sales’ musical career started with a lot of listening. By the time his dad and uncle gave him drums for his 10th birthday, he had already internalized their musical legacy, the elder Tony and brother Hunt having made legendary recordings with Iggy Pop, Todd Rundgren and David Bowie, among others. Years later, the jazz, R&B, and rock-and-roll that was drilled into his head would lay the foundation for his own music.

After spending years working with several Bay Area groups including Oakland’s art-rockers Everyone is Dirty, and late ’70s SF punk band Negative Trend, Sales finally picked up a guitar and began writing in earnest. Following a few years of demo recordings, live shows, and line-up changes, Ardent Sons, whose principle members are Sales and Bay Area multi-instrumentalist Dave Flores, is ready to release their debut record, No More Than This. Releasing on May 3rd via Wondertaker Records, the album is a sincere reflection on life unfolding, always looking up, but grounded in the impermanence of the human condition.

Today Glide is excited to premiere the standout tune “Black Magic.” Coming in at over six minutes, the song is a slowburning track of greasy R&B simmering with soulful goodness. While Tony displays prowess as an effortlessly smooth songwriter and vocalist, the Ardent Sons as a band showcase the perfect balance of in-tune tightness and an ability to lock into a laid back, in-the-pocket groove. These musicians aren’t  trying to get anywhere too quick, instead taking their time to create their own vibe that feels at once like a throwback but also fresh and new.

Describing the inspiration behind the song, Tony has this to say:

“There are ways life just happens to you. You can’t call all the shots, and some unfortunate shit happens that’s out of your control. All you can do is accept it and move on. Even then, some stuff doesn’t give up its grip. It’s about growing up feeling powerless and a little isolated. ”

Ardent Sons’ No More Than This will be available May 3rd on vinyl, digital and streaming formats via Wondertaker Records.

SOUL TRACKS PREMIERES JAKE NAJOR & THE MOMENT OF TRUTH’S NEW SINGLE

Click here to listen to Jake Najor & The Moment of Truth’s funky new single “High Costa Living” via Soul Tracks

World Premiere: Jake Najor knows the “High Costa Living”

Okay, when the debate ensues about which region of our nation funks the hardest, the two regions that rep the hardest are The Big Apple and the Buckeye State. New York City and Ohio have the receipts to lay claim to the funk capital of the world.

The New York City versus Ohio debate can almost drown out the legitimate claims coming from other funky locales such as Detroit, Chicago, Atlanta and Texas, just to name a few. And then there is California, the state that contributed Sly and the Family Stone and Tower of Power and Tony, Toni, Tone – and that’s just northern California.

Drummer and all around funk master Jake Najor wants you to know that they funk pretty hard in So-Cal. Artists from coast to coast, such as Oakland funkateer Raphael Saddiq, Karl Denson, as well as hip-hop legends like Big Daddy Kane and De La Soul have tapped the San Diego native to put his brand of stank of their records.

Najor put together a band called Jake Najor and the Moment of Truth that is comprised of a number of hard driving, funky west coast players on an album titled In the Cut that will drop at the end of March.

We present to SoulTrackers a World Premiere of the lead single “High Costa Living,” a hard charging number featuring Najor’s energized drumming and the vocals of another west coast legend, Mixmaster Wolf. Wolf endows this anthem about the realness of the struggle with vocals that James Brown styled cadences with the intensity of the blues shouters of yore. Check out “High Costa Living” here.

THE BIG TAKEOVER PREMIERES DATURA4’S NEW VIDEO “BLACK DOG KEEP RUNNING”

Click here to check out Datura4’s new music video “Black Dog Keep Running” via The Big Takeover

Video Premiere: “Black Dog Keep Running” by Datura4

Notable Australian psych-/rock ‘n’ roll band Datura4 returned with their third studio album, Blessed Is The Boogie, earlier this April on Alive Naturalsound Records and they’re currently on a Western Australia tour that kicked off on April 12th.

The Fremantle-based rockers are fronted by Aussie legend Dom Mariani, who came to prominence on the music scene in the 1980s with legendary garage rock combo The Stems, and later went on to form revered power-pop outfits DM3 and The Someloves. With Datura4, Mariani and his bandmates dig into their blues, rock, and boogie roots.

Blessed Is The Boogie’s ten new songs build upon Datura4’s ‘guitars to infinity’ approach of Hairy Mountain (2016) and the hard rocking, progressive blues and psychedelic stylings of debut LP Demon Blues (2015). Both albums were released through Alive NaturalSound Records and gained critical acclaim in Australia, Europe, and the U.S.

The Big Takeover is stoked to host the premiere of a video of the track “Black Dog Keep Running” (Wise title advice right there!). In the video, the door opens to a rockin’ performance by the band, all gritty guitar burn carving out a rhythmic groove, chugging percussion, determined drum strikes, sudden psychedelic guitar flourishes, and coolly rough and passionate vocals.

The video’s visuals are done up in stark black ‘n’ white with sharp flashes of light, as well as sparks of orange-red burning embers that float upwards into the noir atmosphere.

Mariani sheds some light on the creation of the weighty, but tuneful number, commenting, “The main riff came about from a regular jam one evening. For some reason it had me thinking the Yardbirds and it morphed into something heavier and more powerful as the words were coming quite freely. The more I got into it, the more cathartic it became. “When the blues turn to black you look for the silver bullet to keep the black dog from one’s door… let the black dog pass me by.”“

AMERICANA HIGHWAYS PREMIERES BOHANNONS’ NEW MUSIC VIDEO “HUNGOVER HILLS”

Click here to check out Bohannons’ new “Hungover Hills” music video

Video Premiere: Bohannons’ “Hungover Hills” From “Bloodroot” Album

By  Melissa Clarke

Americana Highways is pleased to present this video premiere of the Chattanooga band, the Bohannons,’ “Hungover Hills.” The song is from their studio album, Bloodroot, recently available via Cornelius Chapel Records. The album was recorded at Dial Back Sound studio, produced and mixed by Matt Patton and Bronson Tew.

“Hungover Hills” is Matt Bohannon on lead guitar and vocals, Marty Bohannon on guitar and vocals, Billy C. Robinson on bass and vocals, Mike Gault on drums and percussion, with Jimbo Mathus on piano.

The video was directed by Marty Bohannon and Mike Gault, and edited by Mike Gault. The cinematography for this is excellent, with scene after scene of visual metaphors– e.g when the protagonist’s bedhead resembles the feathered artwork he is vaguely contemplating — and discordant scenes that emulate the dull ache of a hangover. As for the song, it’s not often that a song so clearly mimics its subject matter, but the Bohannons have pulled it off and made it seem completely effortless. From the vague distant-sounding whistling, to the slightly dissonant minor key, watching this will remind you of your most recent hangover.  Bohannons deliver a unique twist of musical innovation this spring.

Inspired after listening to a lot of early Pink Floyd. The soundtrack to the movie More comes to mind. Finished after living alone in my 20s and feeling nostalgic about home. The instrumentation really came together quick in the studio exceeding my expectations after some tips from Matt Patton producer on the vocal harmony and of course Jimbo Mathus added the piano parts which I could not live without. — Matt Bohannon

BLURT PREMIERES HOLIDAY GUNFIRE’S NEW SINGLE “SHE’S GOT A MACHINE”!

Video Premiere: Holiday Gunfire “She’s Got A Machine”

Trippy track plucked from the group’s recently released debut on Cornelius Chapel. (Photo credit: Jackie Lo)

Less than two years after the Alabama-based Holiday Gunfire came together over fireworks, booze and BBQ, the group is already out with their self-titled debut LP. The record is a raucous, wildly diverse tour through the world of rock, drawing in influences across the spectrum from punk and garage to power pop and ’90s alternative.

By John B. Moore

Given that, BLURT jumped at the opportunity to host the trippy video premiere for the band’s latest single, “She’s Got A Machine.”

“The initial idea of the song happened when I was visiting the Hemingway House in Key West,” said Lester Nuby III. “I had the idea of an actual physical machine that someone could use to break someone’s heart. Destroy their life/Kill their spirit. What would that look like? Where is it kept? And over time, the person that uses it also is destroyed. A true uplifter! Enjoy!”

With that in mind: enjoy!

POPMATTERS PREMIERES LEFT LANE CRUISER’S NEW SINGLE “TWO DOLLAR ELVIS”

Left Lane Cruiser Issues Sizzling Electric Folk Number, “Two Dollar Elvis” (premiere)

by JEDD BEAUDOIN

Left Lane Cruiser’s new album arrives later this spring. In the meantime we have a small taste of its almighty might, musical muscle via a deep appreciation of a good friend and cosmic character, “Two Dollar Elvis”.

“Two Dollar Elvis” in the latest song from Left Lane Cruiser. The Fort Wayne, Indiana-based outfit returns with the album Shake and Bake May 31 via Alive Naturalsound Records.

“On their latest song ‘Two Dollar Elvis’  exemplifies Left Lane Cruiser’s quick ‘n’ dirty approach to blues-based rock, a powerful exploration of rhythm and soul that calls to mind ZZ Top at the little ol’ band from Texas’ rawest glory. Of course, Left Lane Cruiser is its own entity and the intersections it shares with past legends is largely coincidental. At the same time, Left Lane Cruiser is also creating electrified folk music with “Two Dollar Elvis”, an homage to a character who makes life a little more interesting by living it on his terms. It’s also a small taste of the power the Indiana unit wields in the live setting where realness and might matter and where few can be declared true champions of the medium.

Left Lane Cruiser frontman Freddy J IV offered these observations on the tune: “It’s about our good friend Jason ‘Hall of Fame’ Buchanan. He is a jack of all trades. Celebrity Santa Claus, comedian, promoter, personal trainer, little league baseball umpire, and he also runs a sightseeing business down in Nashville called King of the Road. He dresses up like a Two Dollar Elvis, and gives tours in an old 1957 Cadillac, showing tourists the Nashville sites.”

Freddy adds, “Beyond this, Jason has been involved with the band in a number of ways. He began as just a fan. He used to come out to our shows and explain to us his many talents and how he could help the band. One time he opened up a show for us doing his comedy routine. Other times he booked, promoted, and ran the door for our shows in Nashville. He also drove up to Fort Wayne to appear in our last music video for ‘Claw Machine Wizard’. That’s the best thing about Two Dollar Elvis. He just wants to help people out, lift ’em up, build their name, make them famous. He’s a real go-getter. The song is basically a collection of his quotes and a general description of his duties as the Two Dollar Elvis.”

PUNK NEWS PREMIERES LEFT LANE CRUISER’S NEW TRACK “SWEAT LOVE TO SHINE”

Click here to listen to LLC’s new song “Sweat Love To Shine” via Punk News

Today, we are excited to debut the new track by Left Lane Cruiser!

This track is a roadhouse rumbler. With the bluesey distortion of ZZ Top and George Thorogood and some stoner rock low end swing for support, this track is the soundtrack to a bar located 15 miles off route 66 at 1:15 AM Sunday morning. That is, this track is gnarly.

The band’s Freddy J spoke to Punknews about the tune: “‘Sweat Love to Shine’ is a song about heat. From the heat on the stage to the heat on the street. When your sweat starts to shine you know you feeling that heat. As a band on the road your job is to bring the party but the fuzz is always waiting around the corner, ready to jump out and getcha. And most musicians are left in a constant vulnerable condition to law enforcement. It’s a hard line to walk.”

Shake and Bake is out via Bomp and you can pre-order it here. Meanwhile, check out the new tune below, right now!

THE BLUEGRASS SITUATION PREMIERES THE TILLERS’ NEW MUSIC VIDEO

Click here to watch The Tillers’ new music video “The Old General Store Is Burning Down” via The Bluegrass Situation.

Nestled along the banks of the Ohio River lies a quaint little northern Kentucky town called Rabbit Hash. A quirky and vibrant town frequently filled with musicians, artisans, river folk, old-timers, bikers, hippies, punks, and many other colorful travelers. The indisputable heart of this bend in the river is the Rabbit Hash General Store, built in 1831. The general store is a mecca for the region’s folk music scene and has hosted concerts behind the big wood stove for many years. The general store has survived many a flood and many a floorboard stomping hootenanny, but on a cold night in February 2016 the general store caught fire and was destroyed.

“After the tears had dried, the people of Rabbit Hash picked themselves up by their bootstraps, gathered around, and with the generous help of folks all over the world, rebuilt the general store in just about a year’s time. ‘The Old General Store is Burning Down’ is a song dedicated to the good people of Rabbit Hash and to the unwavering spirit of community and togetherness that they promote and embrace. The words of old-time fiddle player Tommy Taylor still ring true: ‘Rabbit Hash Kentucky is where I want to be. Cornbread molasses and sassafras tea.’ Long live Rabbit Hash, Kentucky!” — Mike Oberst, singer-songwriter-banjo player, The Tillers

GHETTOBLASTER MAGAZINE PREMIERES ARDENT SONS’ TRACK “ANYTHING HELPS”

Song Premiere: Ardent Sons “Anything Helps” | Click here to listen

Ardent Sons is a rock and roll band from Oakland, California, fronted by Flamin’ Groovies drummer Tony T. Sales. Their songs explore classic themes of love and loss, travels between broken homes and shaky relationships, and redemption in life’s near-forgotten moments.

Ardent Sons’ No More Than This will be available May 3 on vinyl, digital and streaming formats via Wondertaker Records. Ardent Sons will be opening up for the Flamin’ Groovies’ local San Fran show at The Chapel on Friday May 10. Tony will be doing double duty that evening – fronting his own band Ardent Sons and then drumming with Flamin’ Groovies (the latter who will be performing their classic LP Teenage Head in its entirety, featuring original singer Roy Loney).

Today, Ghettoblaster has the pleasure of premiering “Anything Helps.” This is what Sales says about it.

“‘Anything Helps’ is about extending love and generosity to those around us. Living can be hard. You walk out of the house and see people barely holding on. Whether it’s a stranger with a sign at an off-ramp, begging for change, or a friend or family member going through hard times, sometimes we need reminding that just a little bit of love and understanding can make a difference.”
