Kendra Morris‘ new studio album “I Am What I’m Waiting For” was recently featured on NPR’s New Music Friday best-of round-up, where John Morrison said of the LP “This album is dope. There’s some old school soul and rock elements mixed in, but it all still feels very contemporary. This record has a lot of spirit and attitude.”

GUITAR WORLD PREMIERES THE NEW VIDEO FROM GOODNIGHT, TEXAS FEAT. METALLICA’S KIRK HAMMET!

Kirk Hammett rarely plays guest solos, but he teamed up with folk-rockers Goodnight, Texas to deliver “an absolute vintage wah solo” on Greeny – hear it now
By Matt Owen

Hear how the Metallica maestro helped the band usher in a heavy new sonic direction with the help of one of music’s most famed Les Pauls in this Guitar World exclusive premiere

Kirk Hammett’s year so far has been defined by his activities with both Metallica and Gibson, but the electric guitar titan recently took time away from his formal commitments to record a guest solo on a new single from Goodnight, Texas.

While Runaways is notable for the fact it marks a significant sonic shift for the folk rock outfit – who decided to craft “a beast of a hard rock song” this time out – it’s perhaps the presence of Hammett himself (and of one of rock’s most iconic Les Pauls) that makes the track especially noteworthy for guitar fans.

Indeed, Runaways doesn’t just feature the Metallica maestro performing a guitar solo – it features him performing a solo on the fretboard of his legendary Greeny Les Paul.

Boasting a main riff that singer-songwriter Patrick Dyer Wolf says has been “lurking in my drafts like a caged animal”, Runaways sees the band resign their usual ensemble of banjos and mandolins to a minor role, instead opting for a dual guitar attack that reaches its peak when Hammett arrives on the scene.

With a cranked wah pedal – probably the same one he revealed to be his favorite not too long ago – the Gibson and ESP signature artist brings his A-game to the track, wielding Greeny (which recently added another ailment to its long list of injuries) for some scorching pentatonic runs and fiery bends.

Understandably, Goodnight, Texas, are elated with the final product: “This is the hardest we’ve ever rocked on a recording,” Wolf reflects. “That’s thanks in no small part to an actual and absolute vintage Kirk Hammett wah solo on his legendary Greeny guitar, about which I am self-pinching daily.

“The main riff of the song had been lurking in my drafts like a caged animal since our last album,” he continues, “and at some point in the past year we decided it was time to set it free.”

THE BLUEGRASS SITUATION PREMIERES THE BROTHERS COMATOSE’S NEW VIDEO FOR THEIR RECENT SINGLE “THE IPA SONG”!

Artist: The Brothers Comatose
Hometown: San Francisco, California
Song: “The IPA Song” (featuring Ronnie McCoury)
Release Date: October 5, 2023
Label: Swamp Jam Records

In Their Words: “There comes a time in every band’s existence when you have speak up and let the chips fall where they may. We realize that this statement is really going to split our crowd, but it’s time we say something. We can’t drink IPAs anymore! They’ve gotten too strong and too hoppy and we just can’t do it any longer. All we drink are light beers now and maybe it’s because we turned into more of a quantity, not quality type of band… or maybe we just turned into a bunch of beer wusses. Either way, no more IPAs!

“It all stems from us overdoing it back in the day when we were sponsored by a beer company and they delivered 3 cases (72 beers!) of IPAs to every tour stop. So there we were, neck deep in super strong, warm IPAs in our van and we were just trying to keep up. It’s kinda like how you can’t drink Bacardi anymore because of that one bad night you had in college. That’s us with strong and hoppy beers. The song started off as a joke because venues kept putting IPAs in our green room, but we would never drink them. It turns out the message really hits home with a lot of people.

“When we were planning to go into the studio to record ‘The IPA Song,’ our mandolin player Greg wasn’t available, because he was out on tour with another band at the time. It turned out our buddy, mandolin maestro Ronnie McCoury, was going to be in town playing a show, so we got him to come and play mandolin and sing high harmonies on the track. And being the legend he is, he truly delivered the goods on this one.

“We recommend cracking a nice, cold, non-IPA beer to enjoy while watching this video.” – The Brothers Comatose
