PUT DOWN YOUR PHONE, TURN ON YOUR MIND, RELAX AND FLOAT DOWN THE RIVER OF TIME WITH VETERAN UNDERGROUND BAND.

The Prefab Messiahs – “Psychsploitation” (video) (premiere)
BY JEDD BEAUDOIN

Some music simply casts us backward to a past that, real or imagined, seems more intense, more romantic than our own. A quick listen to the Prefab Messiahs, and one might think they’re hearing some twentysomethings who were weaned on Rock Band, then graduated to guitars and micro-dosing in the final hours of the Obama presidency. The truth is more tangled a conspiracy theory involving the CIA, the Grateful Dead, and a law and order senator from Montana.

This outfit crawled from the basements and alleyways of Wormtown (Worcester, Mass. to the uninitiated) in 1981, died in 1983 and has been resurrected all these decades on to deliver a new and impressive gospel to a generation with its eyes open and tongues extended, excited about receiving a holy communion in which traces of the lysergic and psychedelic abound.

If you were into trading tapes on a wink and a nod, you might have stumbled upon the Flex Your Mind cassette, issued the year The A-Team first beamed its majesty into the hearts and living rooms of America. Otherwise, your only hope of hearing the lads would have come via short-run CD-R titled Devolver, an anthology that poked its head into the light in 1998…. Click here to read more

The Prefab Messiahs’ Psychsploitation Today will be available on cassette, CD, digital and streaming formats 26 January 2018 via Lolipop/Burger Records.

CLASSIC ROCK’s “Tracks of the Week”: Buffalo Killers – Black Halo

Pleasingly trippy psych-meets-Americana from a group described by Chris Robinson as “one of the best fucking rock ‘n’ roll bands in the world”. Black Halo manages to be both off-kilter (almost jazzy in spirit) but highly melodious as well – with sweet-as-honey harmonies and lead guitar lines.

EXCLUSIVE World Premiere Mark “Porkchop” Holder’s “Big Boat”

“Big Boat” is the first released single from the upcoming album, ‘Death and the Blues.’
By JD Nash

It’s been more than a decade since Mark “Porkchop” Holder starting tearing up juke joints, and dive bars as founder of the punk/blues band, Black Diamond Heavies. Now he leads a dangerous power trio, MPH, who are about to drop their sophomore album, Death and the Blues.

“Blues is the music of poor people, and poor people live closer to death than other people do,” Holder admits. “The message of the title track is simple: death and the blues are real. I have a personal connection with the symbols of death; they remind me not to waste my time. Life is short.”

Their music is not for the faint of heart. It’s raw, gritty, and passionate. Holder’s group is heavy (no pun intended), with snarling guitar that sounds to us like the product of Tinsley Ellis and Leslie West meeting in a dark alley. The rhythm section, made up of Travis Kilgore (bass), and Doug Bales (drums) will rattle the fillings right out of your mouth.

While Death and the Blues contains three cover songs, the lion’s share of tracks are made up of fresh-penned originals. One of those is the first single to be released, “Big Boat.”

“‘Big Boat’ was inspired by an Alan Lomax recording of a levee camp song sang by a worker named Joe Savage,” Holder told us. “I got the image of a man who had to spend his life working on a paddle wheeler in the river to make a living, instead of being at home with his family. I grew up with people who had to make that kind of compromise. The song wrote itself in about 10 minutes.”

Death and the Blues is scheduled for release on November 3rd, via Alive Naturalsound Records . MPH is performing in Clarksdale, Mississippi over the next three days as part of the Deep Blues Festival. Today, they’ll deliver the goods at the Shack Up Inn, and will be staying in and around Clarksdale for five additional performances at Delta Blues Alley Cafe, Cat Head Delta Blues & Folk Art, Levon’s, and Hey Joe’s. Check their website for more upcoming tour stops.

YAHOO! MUSIC PREMIERES BUFFALO KILLERS’ NEW VIDEO!

Video premiere: Timely ‘Need a Changin,’ from Buffalo Killers

After the horrific mass shooting in Las Vegas that took place Oct. 1, guns and gun violence have been on everyone’s mind this month. Buffalo Killers’ Zach Gabbard has been thinking about it as well, having dealt with a gun-related incident at his child’s school.

He wrote a song a few days after dealing with the frightening event, “Need a Changin,’” which addresses his jumble of emotions. Yahoo Music is pleased to offer a first look at the video for the song.

Gabbard say of the track: “The lyrics for ‘Need a Changin’’ came to me a few days after [the school shooting]. On top of dealing with your own s***, you have to constantly relive it through the disgusting media circus that descends upon your community. When it’s too much to feel, you gotta sing.

“On a lighter note, the video comes from a longstanding theory of mine that all joggers are listening to Spoon,” he adds. “That’s not a diss. I love Spoon.”

On Oct. 20, the band’s eighth studio album, Alive and Well in Ohio, will be released via Alive Naturalsound Records. The set was recorded in Middletown, Ohio, and is inspired by seasons of change, life, longing, love, and family.

Mark “Porkchop” Holder – “Captain Captain” (audio) (premiere)
BY JONATHAN FRAHM

MARK “PORKCHOP” HOLDER RETURNS TO THE FOREFRONT WITH SOME BLAZING PRISON BLUES.

Mark “Porkchop” Holder first innovated the blues with his contributions to Black Diamond Heavies when they debuted back in 2004.

These days, he’s bringing his punchy blend of blues and punk influences into his solo work. This includes an upcoming album, Death and the Blues, that’s coming out on 3 November via Alive Naturalsound.

His latest single, “Captain Captain” is an electrifying tale of prison blues. Complete with driving guitar, harmonica, and drums, the song is yet another strong addition to Porkchop’s blazing blues portfolio.

“‘Captain Captain’ is personal,” says Holder. “I had a father who was a prison guard when I was a little boy and an older brother who was incarcerated most of his adult life. In my family, you’re either part of the solution or part of the problem. I hate prisons.”
