James Williamson—Iggy & the Stooges’ guitarist and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer—recently teamed up with Maia, a 19-year-old newcomer, to record “Sickkk,” a heavy new single.

Today, GuitarWorld.com presents an exclusive stream of the song, which will be released digitally and on 7-inch vinyl November 11.

“I first came into contact with Maia through Jason Carmer, my engineer in Berkeley,” Williamson says. “He played me something she had written and sang, and I was instantly intrigued.

“I had him ask her to come down to the studio the next day [Maia is from San Francisco] and I was blown away by her enthusiasm, talent and the nuance of her vocals. We decided that day to write and record these songs together, and this is the result of that effort. We hope you like ‘Sickkk’ as much as we do.”

You can check it out below. It also happens to be available for preorder on 7-inch vinyl and via iTunes.

This single represents the last recording to feature Williamson’s iconic “Leopard Lady” Gibson Les Paul.

This legendary ax has been used on every record Williamson has made—from 1973’s Raw Power, his first album with the Stooges, all the way through 2016. Williamson is donating the Leopard Lady Cherry Burst Les Paul Custom and his Gibson B25N acoustic to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum. He wrote most of the music on Raw Power on the B25N and also used it on Kill City, which he recorded with Iggy Pop in 1975.

GHETTOBLASTER MAGAZINE PREMIERES OHIO KNIFES’S NEW ALBUM “SCALP OR BE SCALPED”!

CLICK HERE TO LISTEN TO OHIO KNIFES’S NEW ALBUM “SCALP OR BE SCALPED” IN ITS ENTIRETY VIA GHETTOBLASTER MAGAZINE!

Album Stream: Ohio Knife’s “Scalp Or Be Scalped”
Ohio Knife is a punch you in the gut, unforgiving, rock n’ roll band hailing from the great midwestern city of Cincinnati, Ohio. Capitalizing on off-the-beaten-path tunings, Ohio Knife’s Jason Snell brings raspy, two-toned vocals and spooky, soulful, trashy guitars as Joe Suer drops an ass-load of low-end drums and Scotty Wood provides all the thumping low-end bass you could ever wish for in rock.

Ohio Knife’s new album Scalp Or Be Scalped will be available October 21 on vinyl, CD and digital formats and today Ghettoblaster has the pleasure of streaming the album. This is what frontman Jason Snell had to say about it:

“Scalp or Be Scalped has been a true labor of love for the past two years — we wanted to record with our buddies at The Lodge (James Leg, All-Seeing Eyes and Walk the Moon) as well at Ultrasuede with John Curley of The Afghan Whigs and finishing at my house. Joe Suer and I learned so much as we mixed the record at my place (Raeburn Ranch and We Have Become Vikings) over the last year plus. We took some chances with giving the music space and time as we knew the record had to have a great sonic range, it had to have plenty of hooks and had to be a record that can stand the test of time.”

Blue Notes: Chats with Chick Corea and Larry Coryell, Plus Pink Martini, John McLaughlin, Steve Forbert, Michael Colton and Datura4 Exclusives
By Mike Ragogna

DATURA4’S HAIRY MOUNTAIN ALBUM EXCLUSIVE
According to Datura4’s frontman Dom Mariani…

“A good friend recently asked where I got the idea for Hairy Mountain. He said the title conjured up something salacious or lewd in his imagination to which I explained that was far from the intention, but more so a homage to our hairy Oz rock forefathers. I said if people want to read into it and come up with their own imagery then that was cool too, but it all started out as some kind of mutant FREE riff set to a Simon Kirke 1/8 groove that I had going on in my head. I played it for a while, searching for a melody and phrasing that would work until the very first line that came out of my mouth was, ‘Making my way down a Hairy Mountain…Hairy Mountain? Ok! I think I know where I’m going with this.
“Drawing on imagery of having grown up and lived on the West Australian coast, things started to flow, taking a left turn and mixing in visions of an alternate universe governed by peace pipe smoking Chiefs, flying spacemen and surfers waiting for the perfect set to break, to convey an optimistic feeling of a better place. I presented it to the band at the next rehearsal and they were like – ‘this is cool!’ What’s the title!? It took a while to knock it into shape, but once we had the groove it became undeniably evident it would be both the title and the centerpiece of our new album. Demon Blues, our first album, opened a door to the song writing possibilities of Datura4 and you can hear it in focus on Hairy Mountain.”

ELMORE MAGAZINE PREMIERES OHIO KNIFE’S NEW TRACK “WISH I KNEW”!

Cincinnati’s Ohio Knife Shares “Wish I Knew” From Scalp Or Be Scalped

Scalp Or Be Scalped, the upcoming album from Cincinnati’s Ohio Knife, isn’t out just yet. But while you wait for what is sure to be a kick-ass rock and roll release from the trio, you can take a peek at “Wish I Knew”. This song is everything that Ohio Knife represents. Raspy and bold vocals meet a hard-rock guitar feel, but don’t let that fool you. Deep down, these guys are full of Midwestern roots and create one-of-a-kind music that meets you in between classic headbanger riffs and sweet, Southern soul. Jason Snell (guitar and vocals) says, “‘Wish I Knew’ came about as an accident. Joe Suer and I were playing as a two-piece under Ohio Knife at the time (one of our first shows), a bigger show at Bogart’s in Cincinnati. I broke a string on my double-neck Danoelectric guitar, and then went to the other guitar neck on that guitar. I made up this chord progression on the spot, [it] sounded pretty rad, so the song spilled out of that string being broken live on stage. When we went to record it, and flush out the words. I made sure it was all about discovery and wonder, the idea of ‘wouldn’t it be great if we had all the answers…’” Listen below and get your hands on Scalp or Be Scalped on October 21st. -Brenda Hillegas http://www.elmoremagazine.com/2016/10/premieres/cincinnatis-ohio-knife-shares-wish-i-knew-from-scalp-or-be-scalped

GLIDE MAGAZINE PREMIERES HOOTS & HELLMOUTH’S NEW TRACK “MOVE ME”!

CLICK HERE TO LISTEN TO HOOTS AND HELLMOUTH’S NEW SONG “MOVE ME” VIA GLIDE MAGAZINE!

Song Premiere: Hoots and Hellmouth preach it with soulful rocker “Move Me”
Hoots and Hellmouth’s fourth album In The Trees is coming out October 28th, and this is an effort that has felt like an expedition. The new album began to take shape over two years ago in a transformed silversmith mill in the little Philadelphia suburb of Clifton Heights, PA. Listen to In The Trees and it should come as little surprise that Mt Slippery, as it is currently known, is also the home base for the band’s fellow rockers Dr. Dog. They assembled with engineer Nathan Sabatino (Dr. Dog, Floating Action, Birdie Busch, etc) and over the course of a couple weeks proceeded to coax these songs out of the ether using all manner of instrumentation. The now-classic acoustic Hoots and Hellmouth sound is certainly present, but as with each record previous, In The Trees pushes the band beyond the borders of what came before. It’s a natural progression, an obvious evolution. Sparking electric tones set old wood aflame. These songs burn with it.

One of those songs is “Move Me”, and today we are excited to offer up a premiere of it right here on Glide Magazine. The song is soulful and tinged with an almost gospel-like sound, yet it still exudes a loping garage rock feel. It also features an absolutely ripping guitar solo.

Reflecting on the origins of the song, frontman Sean Hoots says, ”‘Move Me’ operates as a kind of spiritual center for this new album… even though it almost didn’t make the final cut. I wrote it early in the process of compiling material for In The Trees when I had no idea what a new H&H song would/should sound like. It was an attempt to dare myself back into the sway of the muses. To inspire myself back into inspiration. As a trusted friend once said, the waiting is the hardest part.”

Album Premiere: Hoots and Hellmouth, ‘In the Trees’
By Chris Steffen
Philadelphia’s Hoots and Hellmouth get serious about melodies and creating atmospheres on the band’s new album, In the Trees. The band teamed up with engineer Nathan Sabatino, who has worked with fellow Philadelphians Dr. Dog, for an album that touches on folk, country rock, and maybe even a dash of twisted gospel. In his AllMusic review, editor Richie Unterberger made their 2009 album, The Holy Open Secret, an album pick, hailing the record’s diversity and hard to pin down nature, noting “they’re more interesting the eccentric they are.” That variety continues on In the Trees, due out on October 28.

“Our new album began to take shape over two years ago in a transformed silversmith mill in the little Philadelphia suburb of Clifton Heights,” frontman Sean Hoots wrote. “Our more acoustic sound is certainly present, but as with each record, In The Trees has pushed us beyond the borders of what came before. While not written around a premeditated theme, each star in this album’s constellation seems to gather about the axis of the sacred and profane; an omnipresent sensitivity to spirit gives way on more than one occasion to full-blown physical freak-out. For every blissfully still moment of somber reflection there exists an equal and opposite reaction of explosive self-indulgence. This record represents feast and famine.”
In the Trees can be ordered here.

PURE VOLUME PREMIERES DATURA4’S NEW TRACK “TROLLS”!

CLICK HERE TO LISTEN TO DATURA4’S NEW SING “TROLLS” VIA PURE VOLUME!

PREMIERE: Datura4 — “Trolls”
Australia has a pretty killer rock scene, and we’re not just talking about AC/DC, Tame Impala and Wolfmother. Western Australia’s Datura4 are unveiling their second album later this week, and we’ve got their vintage ’70s psych rocker “Trolls” to premiere today. The song is pretty killer, and would have been at home on the Dazed and Confused soundtrack. So, what we’re saying is you better jam on this crank the volume to 11.

“Living in the age of the internet troll,” Dom Marinai says of the song and video. “Trolls who hide behind computer screens. Trolls who deflect their own emotions creating havoc, being disruptive, often for no real reason at all. It was one of the first songs I brought along for the album. I’d only ever written one other tune in a three-four time signature – it really suited the idea for a song titled ‘Trolls’ and it was one of the easiest songs to record. We really got into a groove with it and captured something menacing and special if those two things can co-exist.”
Datura4’s Hairy Mountain will be available on limited hand-mixed starburst vinyl, CD and digital formats October 28th via Alive Naturalsound Records. Buy it here.
