THE BLOODHOUNDS

Click here to download a hi-res promo photo of The Bloodhounds.

The Bloodhounds play Blues / R&B rock ‘n’ roll with a fresh, edgy, almost punk edge, and add a hint of a Latin groove to the mix. These guys are from East L.A., and if you haven’t heard the news, that’s where it’s all goin’ down these days!

Though founded on electric sound, they also dig the old jug band style of playing. Picking up cheap acoustic guitars, turning ordinary household items into instruments and constructing a traditional washtub-broomstick bass, they often busk in the streets of downtown Los Angeles to the delight of large crowds.

The band, formed by Aaron “Little Rock” Piedraita on rhythm guitar, Johnny Santana on bass, Branden Santos on lead guitar and Mark Schafler on drums and percussion, was discovered by Arthur Alexander (The Poppees, Sorrows) who has produced their debut album Let Loose!

The Bloodhounds Let Loose! will be available November 4th, 2014 on CD, digital and limited edition colored vinyl through Alive Naturalsound Records.

BOBBY HARDEN & THE SOULFUL SAINTS

Click here to download new photos of Bobby Harden (credit: Rosie Cohe) and “Bridge of Love” cover art

How do you define a true Soul Man? With difficulty, given that so much is down to a certain mystical mojo. But if anyone knows one when they see him, it would be Stax legend Eddie Floyd, who has spent 60-plus years perfecting the role. When Bobby Harden joined the star-studded Blues Brothers Band in 2012 as one of two singers in support of Floyd, the elder Soul Man immediately recognized similar qualities in his understudy. “He was everything I’d been when I was younger,” said Floyd, who gracefully passed the torch after several tours tag-teaming on stage. “I always tell him. ‘I saw you, my man,’ and I said, ‘That’s it! I can go back to the house and rest!’”

You get the sense it will be many years until Harden makes a similar transition into retirement. The true Soul Man, after all, lives to work, recognizing that success don’t come knocking on the door with a gold-plated invite. Born in Youngstown, Ohio, Harden was blessed with a voice to raise roofs, and after a stint in Houston attending college, headed up to New York City to pursue his passion. It wasn’t always easy, but years singing soul classics on the wedding band circuit sharpened that church-trained voice and polished his moves in the process; they also instilled in Bobby the necessary professionalism to not just survive, but thrive on a slow, yet inexorable, rise in reputation.

Being invited into the Blues Brothers Band, alongside the likes of Steve Cropper, ‘Blue’ Lou Marini, Matt ‘Guitar’ Murphy and of course, Eddie Floyd, provided Harden with a public seal of authenticity, and private assurance that he was on the correct spiritual life path. Then, just as the Blues Brothers Band began to age out, and in-between two albums Bobby released with his own live band, Soul Purpose, he was introduced to Daptone artist Charles Bradley’s trumpet player/producer Billy Aukstik by Kurtis Powers, head of celebrated 24/7 online station The Face Radio. Suddenly, Harden found himself in a different domain, alongside a younger generation of soul musicians and entrepreneurs whose respect for the form was emboldened by a desire to render it thoroughly now. Following Bradley’s tragic demise, Aukstik set up his own label, Dala Records, rearranged Bradley’s backing group into The Soulful Saints, and launched Bobby Harden on Dala in tandem with Powers’ own BQE label. The impressively exuberant single ‘Runnin’ (To Get to Your Love)’ won instant plaudits and sold out its vinyl pressing in almost no time.

Now, following an equally funky second 45, ‘Feels So Good’, comes Bridge of Love, on which Harden’s voice is tailored to perfection by the almost impossibly dexterous Soulful Saints, and further dressed to the nines by an accoutrement of Latin percussion, full-on horns, high-flying backing singers and even a string quartet. The album’s ten original compositions are presented in sparklingly clear stereo sound and run the soul gamut, from grits-n-bricks R&B (‘Played a Fool by You’) to throwback psychedelia (‘One Tribe’), svelte seventies pop (‘One Night of the Week’) and some seriously sophisticated ballads (‘Wounded Hearts’, ‘Bridge of Love’). Together they document Bobby’s life journey in song. Through youthful self-doubt in the opening track ‘It’s My Time’, to confirmation on the exuberant finale ‘Raise Your Mind’, Bobby proves that faith and hard work can pay dividends. “Life is a joy when you free your soul.”

Having gotten to know Bobby personally over the last several years, I can pay testament to his strength of spirit. Onstage, regardless of the group behind him or the co-vocalists alongside him, he knows that 99 ½ just won’t do; this is a man who sweats with the best of them even as every last note remains on pitch. Offstage, Bobby presents with similar intensity of personality but also genuine humility, a recognition that, as he sings on ‘It’s My Time’, “the hurdles will come,” but you “don’t let them bring you down.” Bobby has lived and loved, loved and lived, and his experiences, alongside the performances, have helped make him that true Soul Man. With Bridge of Love, yes indeed Lord, his time has come. ~ Tony Fletcher

Bobby Harden & The Soulful Saints’ Bridge of Love album will be available on vinyl, CD and digital/streaming platforms May 12th via Dala Records / BQE Records.

THE BLOODY HOLLIES

Yours Until the Bitter End is The Bloody Hollies’ follow-up to the highly praised Who to Trust, Who to Kill, Who to Love which was released in 2007 on Alive Naturalsound. Many who are familiar with the band’s sound know them by their trademark murder-themed blues/rock anthems that remind listeners of the ’60s and ’70s golden age of rock & roll. The new album still embraces the dark side of raw garage punk, but comes armed with a more eclectic array of songwriting and musicianship. But don’t let the touches of organ, violin and xylophone fool you, the band’s hybrid of blues and rock & roll continue to shine more impressively than ever. The Bloody Hollies recorded in San Diego, but enlisted the expertise of Jim Diamond in Detroit, a familiar friend of the band that helped bring the sound of this record to its full potential.

Yours Until the Bitter End is a work that reflects a lengthy career that fully embraces The Bloody Hollies’ vast influences while at the same time maintaining the quartet’s unique sound of explosive, over-driven mayhem balanced with intelligently thought-out songwriting. What is most impressive about The Bloody Hollies, however, is the diversity of their strengths, ranging from ’70s classic rock, Americana blues, to an even power-pop songwriting style. Wesley Doyle’s voice is stronger than ever and continues to shine, complimenting Joseph Horgen’s unique slide blues guitar style. The rhythm section of Matthew Bennett (drums) and Erik Noorgard (bass guitar) are as solid as ever and work together perfectly on this record which will go down as The Bloody Hollies’ most impressive to date.

Yours Until the Bitter End comes out September 13th through Alive Records and will available on CD Digipack, Digital Download and Red Colored Vinyl ltd. to 700.

[4/5 stars] “Yours Until the Bitter End still hits with the impact of a cannon; guitarists Wesley Doyle and Joey Horgen’s guitars lock in and lay out fire with precision and fury, and bassist Erik Norgaard and drummer Matt Bennett explode like a handful of M-80s but still hit all the right spots along the way. A dial-it-up-to-ten triumph.“ – Mark Deming / ALL MUSIC

When it comes to slide guitar infused punk, The Bloody Hollies are second to none.” – OC WEEKLY

Nearly a decade after their 2002 debut, this Buffalo-born quartet continues to combine the menace of metal, the feral energy of punk rock, the panache of surf guitar (courtesy, perhaps, of their relocation from Buffalo to San Diego several years ago), the non-stop drive of southern boogie and the rough-edges of the garage. Their music is fast and loud and tight, and though the rhythm guitars, pulsating bass and full-kit drumming will assault your body (thanks, in large part to Jim Diamond’s ferocious mix), it’s Wesley Doyle’s manic vocals that will pin your ears back.” – HYPERBOLIUM

Approximates what Jack White might have sounded like fronting The Faces. Yours Until The Bitter End largely takes an if-it-ain’t-broke-don’t-fix-it approach, and the quartet’s ragged charm remains squarely intact, even when a seemingly errant violin or xylophone creeps into the mix. – MY OLD KENTUCKY BLOG

“Raw and sexy” – ALTERNATIP RADIO/NORWAY

The Bloody Hollies are everything garage-rock fans want. Tracing a lineage from the MC5 to The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, these guys do not mess about.”  – THE GUILDED PALACE OF SIN

Yours Until The Bitter End embraces the dark side of raw garage punk, but comes armed with a more eclectic array of songwriting and musicianship. But don’t let the touches of organ, violin and xylophone fool you, the band’s hybrid of blues and rock & roll continue to shine more impressively than ever.” – EBURBAN

“Listen to Yours Until The Bitter End and see if you aren’t as blown away as I am. It might be the best of the year.”  – WHEN YOU MOTOR AWAY

BOHANNONS TO RELEASE THEIR LATEST STUDIO ALBUM ‘BLOODROOT‘ ON APRIL 5TH, 2019 VIA CORNELIUS CHAPEL RECORDS

From the wilds of Chattanooga spring Bohannons, one of that town’s finest rock bands of the past 20 years, a crackling, snarling beast of an outfit that lands somewhere between Ronnie Wood, Neil Young and a homemade flamethrower. Marty Bohannon’s piercing vocals ride on waves of brother Matt Bohannon’s ringing and whining guitars, driven by the whirling rush of drummer Mike Gaut and bassist Billy C. Robinson’s rhythms. – Stephen Trageser, Nashville Scene

In 2006 the Bohannons would set out on their first American tour retracing their steps year after year and setting off in new directions all the while. What would start as archaic recording processes would eventually bring them to some of the most well-known studios in the country, from Electrical Audio in Chicago to Chase Park Transduction in Athens, GA and on to Dialback Sound in Water Valley, Ms.

Every album from 2010’s Days of Echo to 2015’s Luminary Angels is an invitation to listen and look into both the blessings and burdens of the working class south. The framework of the titles dare to encompass the best of rock, blues, country, power pop, punk and metal.

We are excited to share with you Bloodroot our latest LP. It’s inspired by our home, family, friends, and this indelible planet. The songs are vignettes of this wild journey we are on which is never short of high nor low, and never lacking in love and spirit. – Marty Bohannon

Press release for Bohannons’ 2012 album Unaka Rising….

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Bohannons inhabit a musical universe that, while certainly drawing influence from all over, is firmly rooted in their Tennessee home. With their full-length debut album Unaka Rising, they are clearly taking their homegrown, handcrafted rock to a new level, and we think they’ve set the bar pretty damn high with this one. The album’s title references the Unaka province of East Tennessee and western North Carolina— “One of the finest areas in all the world,” according to singer/guitarist Marty Bohannon. The region has certainly fueled the Bohannons’ fire, providing endless stories and situations from which these songs draw. With a quiver of new material ready to follow up 2011’s stellar EP, Days of Echo, the Bohannons spent the better part of the last year tearing up the road between Chattanooga and Athens, GA where they recorded Unaka Rising at Chase Park Transduction, first with David Barbe and later Drew Vandenberg.
The Bohannons’ Unaka Rising is out now (released July 10, 2012 through This Is American Music) in CD and Digital formats.
“The Bohannons new album, Unaka Rising is a real scorcher. It’s an odd thing to say about a band, but their approach to music makes so much sense that it’s difficult to understand why their particular cocktail of heavy Southern rock jangle hasn’t already been done to death by someone else. A little Two Gallants, a little Black Sabbath, they’re as heavy as they are twangy. They manage their heaviness without venturing into melodrama, which is difficult for many artists that venture into darker territory. Their music begs to serve as a soundtrack to a genre of film that doesn’t currently exist—some kind of violent, stylized-but-gritty (a la Tarantino) Southern road movie patterned after the classic Western model.” – OXFORD AMERICAN
“Are they Country? Are They Blues? Are they ’70s glam metal? Yes.” – Bryan Childs / NINE BULLETS
THE BONNEVILLES’ LATEST STUDIO ALBUM “DIRTY PHOTOGRAPHS” DROPS MARCH 16TH VIA ALIVE NATURALSOUND RECORDS
Northern Ireland rockers The Bonnevilles are renowned for both their incendiary live shows and soulful song-writing skills. Their music is full of heart, smart, and always fun. On Dirty Photographs, their second studio album for Alive, they display their love for gritty blues, primitive rock ‘n’ roll and Irish folk.
While their new effort still traffics in a similar garage-blues-rock vein as their previous 2016 studio album, Arrow Pierce My Heart, the mood has shifted as Dirty Photographs is more of an upbeat affair. As singer-songwriter-guitarist Andrew McGibbon Jr. reveals, “There’s an emotion of positivity on these songs, rather than the usual tales of woe. Most of the tracks are upbeat, or have a positive message, a message of love or even just plain old fashioned sex. I know others have written a world of songs about those things but we haven’t, so we thought it was our time to jump in.”
And as far as the album’s title track is concerned, McGibbon is quick to admit, “It’s a poem of tribute to my wife’s bum. She’s very pretty and does have a lovely one.”
The Bonnevilles’ Dirty Photographs will be available on Limited Edition Vinyl, CD, digital and streaming formats March 16th via Alive Naturalsound Records.
Rick Saunders on his Deep Blues blog describes them as “deep, dark punk and stylish hard roots music with good pop-sense and without a whiff of retro poly stink.”
BONNIE WHITMORE
CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD HI-RES PHOTO OF BONNIE WHITMORE
Bonnie Whitmore‘s last album had a body count and a title, Embers to Ashes, that implied a fiery finality. There are broken bones and hard lessons learned on Whitmore’s new album, but its title – There I Go Again – suggests less ominous themes.
“I feel like I’ve grown up a lot,” she says. “I turned 30 this year, and I’ve been in the business 15 of those years. Songwriting as a profession is a humbling career choice. To write songs that are accessible and relatable as possible required a level of maturity and focus that I have strived to attain on this record. It’s a less self-indulgent record then Embers. Embers To Ashes was what I needed to get through that period of my life. There I Go Again is a celebration of success and failure. Plus, nobody wants to hear two breakup albums in a row.”
Fittingly, the music also reflects a radiant change of direction. The rootsiness of Embers isn’t absent, but the songs on There I Go Again are decidedly less country sounding. Keyboards are played up in places a steel guitar might have inhabited, the drums are more prominent, and Whitmore lets her big voice run through some big, inviting choruses.
“We knew what we had in these songs,” says Whitmore. “It’s not the same Americana sound that we had with Embers. This one is a lot more put together, and I think it comes across as more polished. It’s definitely a pop record, and everyone loves a good pop record.”
She cites Tom Petty’s ability to balance the earthiness of roots music with hooky pop parts as the model she aspired to on the album. “He makes these amazingly awesome pop songs, but is also able to keep them within the lines. You could hear how beautiful the melodies are beyond the grit of rock and roll,” she says. “I struggle with the question – ‘who inspired you?’ – but Petty’s music has, and always will inspire me.”
Whitmore also credits her parents, both the music they chose to play at home in Denton and on the radio, and also her father’s band, which featured Whitmore starting at age 8, as well as her sister Eleanor.
By 15, Whitmore was playing professional gigs outside the family band. She played and sang in Hayes Carll’s band for a while, and recently she spent quite a bit of time touring and recording with the Mastersons, the husband/wife band featuring sister Eleanor and Houston native and guitarist Chris Masterson.
They’re good family to have: Both of them play on Whitmore’s albums, which Masterson produced.
There have been tough gigs for Whitmore along the way. She went to Kickstarter to finance the new record. There she included a video with some footage from a particularly undesirable gig performing in a sports bar beneath the glow of a giant flat-screen TV.
“Those gigs can be hard to take,” she says. “You’re playing three hours to a group of people that do not seem to realize you’re there. It can be a humbling, disheartening experience.”
But her album title speaks to a commitment to her music. “It seemed like a pretty good title for a second album,” she says. “It provides a sense of diving into the deep and seeing if it floats. That’s what an artist has to do when releasing music now. Nobody is really doing it for the money, we’re doing this because we love it, and that’s the only reason to do it at all. There’s nothing else I’d rather do. Sometimes you have three people come out to a show sometimes you have 300. To me it’s simple. I play music because it’s what I do. Those who want to hear it are what makes it worth it.” – andrew dansby
BRENDAN BENSON
Not every two-year period measures out the same, noted Brendan Benson, the 51-year old Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter and co-founder of The Raconteurs. Benson had just finished his well-received seventh album, Dear Life, in 2019 when his world came to a stop.
“I was rehearsing for South-By-Southwest and gearing up for a tour and had a band ready and then, of course, the world shut down,” he said in a recent interview. The lockdown then began to reroute lives, societies and ambitions worldwide.
“Everything changed,” Benson said. “I went to work on some songs so I’d have new material when things opened up.” Over months with minimal interactions, those songs coalesced and took on lives of their own, he said. Two years of semi-isolation, of fading relationships, of the natural inward turn that comes with less human contact unexpectedly pushed Benson’s songwriting into new places.
Instead of being an afterthought, Benson’s solitude evolved into Low Key, the eighth album by the idiosyncratic songwriter who has enjoyed both worldwide popularity with The Raconteurs and a devoted cult following for his numerous solo projects.
Low Key, the Nashville-based artist said, was his chance to explore how lives and relationships changed during the lengthy isolation from the normal interactions of everyday life. Benson might not have written songs such as “People Grow Apart” and “Whole Lotta Nothing” prior to 2019, he said.
“The lockdown afforded people the opportunity to cut ties – or maybe it caused people to do that,” he said. “Whatever the case may be, a lot of people fell out.”
“But then relationships ending is one of my favourite topics for songwriting,” he said with a laugh.
This isn’t to say that the 8-track effort recorded in Benson’s own Readymade Studio in Nashville is a grim look at the state of human condition. Just the opposite. The catchy, upbeat lead track “Ain’t No Good” pokes fun at destructive self-absorption while the guitar-heavy “Whatever’s On My Mind” skewers Benson’s own hyperkinetic, stream-of-consciousness thinking.
[photo: Guillaume Lechat]
And then there’s the most unlikely track of all: A cover of Gerry Rafferty’s smooth 1978 hit, “Right Down the Line.”  The cover was suggested by a friend.
“She’s always been saying I should do that song. I don’t normally pay attention when people say that stuff. But then I happened to hear it one day and I said, ‘Dang. This is good.’”
Low Key concludes with “Something A Little Like Home,” a song that surprised Benson because it turned to the loneliness of being on the road and what people will do – one-night-stands, bad behaviour — simply to stave off the solitude of their environment.
But that said, Benson added that he is excited to tour again, not just in support of Low Key but Dear Life as well. Low Key, he said, works as a coda for Dear Life, almost a sequel. And because Dear Life never had its own tour moment in front of a live audience, he’d like to build some shows around supporting both.
Or as Greg Calbi, the album’s mastering engineer at Sterling Sound put it, “Brendan combines the classic ’80s style songwriting in the Squeeze, Crowded House vein with some incredible contemporary sonic magic, the kind of album which entices the listener to get tickets to a live show immediately.”
The fact is, it’s been a long, rough two years for everyone, Benson said. He knows that this wait for normal times, whatever that is, might be a long one. But he’s hardly new at this. Benson has been in the industry for decades and has produced his own eight solo records as well as many others.
The lockdown that left him mostly with himself, professionally speaking. Confined to his Nashville studio, Benson played every instrument on Low Key and handled all of the initial production. Michael Ilbert then mixed the album at Hansa Mixroom, Berlin, Greg Calbi and Steve Fallone mastered it at New Jersey’s Sterling Sound.
The end result was exactly what Benson had been searching for – even if he didn’t know it at the time. Those years spent honing his craft as a songwriter, producer and touring musician, turned what could have been a liability of isolation into something far deeper, a body of work he described as the best of his career.
“I have nothing to prove anymore,” he said. “With age and experience comes a certain wisdom and freedom. I feel comfortable, confident. I don’t need validation. That’s why I am so excited for everyone to hear this.
“I think I’ve finally figured it out.”
Brendan Benson’s new album Low Key will be available on Limited Edition 180 gram blue vinyl LP and digital/streaming platforms on December 2nd via Schnitzel Records.
BRIMSTONE HOWL
Brand new album by Lincoln, NE’s favorite garage sons, Brimstone Howl. This time the gang went to Costa Mesa, CA, to record Big Deal. What’s He Done Lately?  (the title references a quote from Johnny Ramone about Phil Spector) at The Distillery under the guidance of engineer/producer Mike McHugh (known to produce some of the most heinous, blown-out sounds this side of the galaxy, including Black Lips, Jon Spencer and Andre Williams). The result is considerably more fuzzed than their previous work with Detroit producer Jim Diamond but still pummels.
Frontman John Ziegler admits that Big Deal is thematically “a little brighter” than previous efforts, but also explains, “While our last record We Came In Peace sounded ‘big,’ the main characteristic of this album is its heat. Analog from start to finish. Recorded to tape. Mixed to tape. And from tape the wax was cut. This record sounds ‘hot’.”
The new album – Brimstone Howl’s third for Alive Records –  finds a couple of older songs (such as “Elation” and “M60” rerecorded from their debut album and first 45) riding shotgun with newer explosive tracks such as “Last Time,”  “Everybody Else Is Having Fun,” “Iota Man” and “Suicide Blues.” “Musically, our instincts remain the same as always,” Ziegler states, “but we do more pop sounding things at times, with as much drama as we can fit into our rock’n’roll template. I get the feeling that’s out of style or going out, even within our own little community of garage folks, but we’re from the Midwest and we can’t f**k around and waste our time singing songs that aren’t fully sincere. We’ve been doing music for it’s own sake for a long time now, none of us have made rent money from this, for whatever that’s worth. We have music in our hearts, goddamn it, and we always will. That will always remain the most important thing in this industry, and whatever corner of it we inhabit.”
BROTHER DEGE REVAMPS LAST YEAR’S DIGITAL-ONLY SUMMER MIXTAPE “SCORCHED EARTH POLICY” INTO A DELUXE CD EDITION WITH NEW STUDIO TRACKS ON JULY 24, 2015
DIFFUSER.FM PREMIERES BROTHER DEGE’S NEW TRACK “PAY NO MIND”! CLICK HERE TO LISTEN
The Deep South’s forgotten son comes banging out of the gates with his third album under the Brother Dege moniker, Scorched Earth Policy: Deluxe, morphing his signature Delta, sonic-slide sound (as heard in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained official soundtrack) into the psyouthern, psych swamposphere. Joined by his touring band, The Brethren, Brother Dege & Co. push these 12 tracks into rural cinematic realms, adding their post-millennial update to the southern rock & roll lexicon.
Following his two previous acclaimed solo efforts (2009’s Folk Songs Of The American Longhair & 2013’s How To Kill A Horse) Brother Dege released a unique 19-track digital-only “summer mixtape” last year entitled Scorched Earth Policy, featuring a mix of newly recorded studio songs, demos, covers and field recordings. Now Dege has updated it into a more cohesive studio album, Scorched Earth Policy: Deluxe paring down some of the rougher demos and field recordings and has added four new studio tracks to it. This is the first time any of these 12 songs will be available on CD.
Brother Dege’s Scorched Earth Policy: Deluxe will be available July 24, 2015 on CD and digital formats.
PREVIOUS PRESS RELEASE FOR BROTHER DEGE’S INCLUSION ON THE SOUNDTRACK OF QUENTIN TARANTINO’S FILM “DJANGO UNCHAINED”
Django442
Brother Dege (“deej”) (aka Dege Legg) is one of the best-kept secrets in the Deep South. A musician, writer and Southern enigma, Dege is the haunted face of 21st century Delta blues. Like the possessed offspring of Faulkner and Son House, he plays slide guitar in the age-old tradition of the blues greats, yet manages to breathe new life into this revered Delta idiom.
Well, make that… was one of the best-kepts secrets… as the reclusive Louisiana Cajun’s song “Too Old To Die Young” was personally selected by Quentin Tarantino to appear in the soundtrack of his new film Django Unchained, starring Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio and Samuel L. Jackson.
Tarantino was recently interviewed on SiriusXM Radio’s show Little Steven’s Underground Garage, where he discussed all of the music track-by-track from Django Unchained. Here’s what he had to say about Brother Dege’s song “Too Old To Die Young”…“I was listening to the radio and this song (“Too Old to Die Young”) came on. And I said, ‘wow… that’s pretty damn good.’ I could see a cool ass action scene going to this. I thought it could be really, really groovy. So I had my music supervisor get me the CD. And frankly, every track on the Brother Dege CD could have been in the movie. It works and has a badass score sound to it. Almost every song [on the album] could be a theme song. It’s like a greatest hits album. But this song “Too Old to Die Young,” it’s pretty damn badass. And it’s used in the movie in a pretty damn badass way, I’ve got to say.”
The soundtrack for Django Unchained is out now.
THE BROTHERS COMATOSE
Click here to download a new hi-res band photo of The Brothers Comatose (credit: Giant Eye)
Whether traveling to gigs on horseback or by tour bus, Americana mavens The Brothers Comatose forge their own path with raucous West Coast renderings of traditional bluegrass, country and rock ‘n’ roll music. The five-piece string band is anything but a traditional acoustic outfit with their fierce musicianship and rowdy, rock concert-like shows.
The Brothers Comatose is comprised of brothers Ben Morrison (guitar, vocals) and Alex Morrison (banjo, vocals), Scott Padden (bass, vocals), Philip Brezina (violin), and Greg Fleischut (mandolin). When they’re not headlining The Fillmore for a sold-out show or appearing at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, the band is out on the road performing across America, Canada, Australia, and hosting their very own music festival, Comatopia, in the Sierra foothills.
The Brothers Comatose just premiered their new music video “Gone Gone Gone” via Holler. This marks the third single (following “Soft & Blue” and “Too Many Places”) from their forthcoming studio album When It All Falls Apart due in early 2022.
These new singles will be featured as part of the Brothers Comatose’s new weekly video series “Ear Snacks.” Each week the band will release a new live video of a cover song that has inspired them, a reimagined version of an older tune, or a new track off their upcoming album.”
BROWN BIRD
Brown Bird has a tendency towards the dark side. Pulling from the influences of the blues, outlaw country, roots rock, early American folk, Gypsy and Eastern European music, they offer harmonized voices, haunting lyrics and diverse rhythm and instrumentation, which surges in waves that often swell into high-spirited, foot-stomping madness.
Brown Bird began in 2003, while singer/songwriter David Lamb (guitar, banjo, percussion, vocals) was living in Seattle. Lamb has since toured across the country multiple times, and now resides in Rhode Island with his partner MorganEve Swain (vocals, fiddle, cello, upright bass).
Since the 2009 release of their fourth album, The Devil Dancing, Brown Bird has toured extensively in the US, and supported The Low Anthem on tour across Europe. The duo is currently working on their fifth full-length to be released this fall, but first they will release their brand new EP, The Sound Of Ghosts. The EP is currently available for streaming or purchase directly from the band at http://brownbird.bandcamp.com , in both digital format and on a hand silkscreened CD, limited to 500 copies. The EP will be released digitally and in stores on May 10th through Supply & Demand Music.
In addition to touring both coasts this Spring in support of The Sound Of Ghosts, Brown Bird has also been invited to perform at the Virada Cultural in Sao Paulo, Brazil on April 16th, as well as the renowned Newport Folk Festival in Rhode Island on July 31st, sharing the bill with the likes of Elvis Costello, EmmyLou Harris, M. Ward, Wanda Jackson, Mavis Staples and many others. George Wein, President of the Newport Festivals Foundation, was thrilled about the mix of national and local talent, saying in the press release for the festival, “I couldn’t be prouder of our new relationship with Rhode Island’s own Alex and Ani as well as the exciting artists who have Rhode Island roots such as What Cheer? Brigade, David Wax Museum and Brown Bird.”
“Absolutely incredible.”  – RICHMOND PLAYLIST
“Despite changing line-ups over of the past few years, David Lamb (guitar, banjo, percussion) has found a great complement in bandmate Morganeve Swain (fiddle, upright bass, cello), together creating dark folk music with touches of rockabilly, Americana, blues, Eastern European flourishes and haunting harmonies.” – RECORD DEPT.
“So ridiculously good… ”  – Aimsel Ponti / THE PORTLAND PRESS HERALD
“… they absolutely blow people away.”  – PROVIDENCE DAILY DOSE
”Compelling art-folk tunes.”  – BOSTON EXAMINER
[EDITOR’S PICK] “David Lamb’s voice is gruff but sweet. It’s also trustworthy. So as the Brown Bird boss sings his way through the gritty dreams on The Sound of Ghosts you fall under his spell rather quickly. The four-track disc seems a bit more dynamic than previous Brown Bird outings. Now that Lamb has a bassist/fiddler, the music glistens and has more thrust.”  – THE PROVIDENCE PHOENIX
Incredibly beautiful… great indie folk performed with passion and power.”  – THE ROCK & ROLL GURU
“… some really great tunes.”  – Lindsay Ellison / WMBR’S LOST HIGHWAY
“…bursting with sparse, haunted folk tunes, outlaw country and gypsy riots” – THE MAD MACKEREL / UK
“…gothic folk rock with flecks of bluegrass and the sweet breezes of southern riverbanks.”  – SLOWCOUSTIC
Brown Bird, is a rootsy American folk band that seems to frequent the dark side of those influences. The music can be haunting, it can have foot stomping rhythm, and its always quite beautiful.” – MUSIC SAVAGE
BUFFALO KILLERS TO RELEASE THEIR EIGHTH STUDIO ALBUM “ALIVE AND WELL IN OHIO” OCTOBER 20TH ON VINYL, CD, DIGITAL & STREAMING FORMATS VIA ALIVE NATURALSOUND RECORDS
The eighth album from Buffalo Killers, Alive and Well in Ohio, was recorded at their Howler Hills Farm analog studio on their own terms. Equipped with only the knowledge they had gained over the years, the band crafted this album without rules or pressure.
Created and produced by songwriting brothers Zachary and Andrew Gabbard, the warm, consciously imperfect, and raw sound finds its inspiration in seasons of change, life, longing, love and family. The universal truth that the only constant is change is woven throughout the 12 songs.
The album, conceptually, is inspired by the desire to create something homegrown and real. Pull up the faders and you can hear the guys singing, stomping, clapping and bleeding into each other’s mics… on their own time, in their own space. They captured the melodies as they emerged.
The songs on Alive and Well in Ohio are Buffalo Killers’ most truthful yet.
Alive and Well in Ohio will be available on limited edition vinyl, CD, digital and streaming formats October 20th via Alive Naturalsound Records.
“One of the best fucking rock ‘n’ roll bands in the world”Chris Robinson
“Heavy on the heavy and with plenty of hooks”High Times
Buffalo Killers hailing from Ohio deliver hook heavy homegrown rock ‘n’ roll. Lead by songwriting brothers Zachary and Andy Gabbard, the band has drawn the attention of the likes of Chris Robinson, who invited them to open a string of dates for The Black Crowes and Dan Auerbach, who produced their sophomore effort Let It Ride, to name a few.
The boys are coming off a prolific five years of released albums: The critically acclaimed 3 (2011), Dig. Sow. Love. Grow. (2012), Ohio Grass (2013) and producing Heavy Reverie (2014) and Fireball of Sulk (2014) along side Jim Wirt. The Gabbard Brothers also jumped into new territories with Zachary producing Handsome Jack’s Do What Comes Naturally and Andy recording his debut solo album Fluff both released on Alive Naturalsound Records.
The band is currently holed-up in the country at their Howler Hills Farm’s analog studio working on their latest effort, slated for release on Alive Naturalsound Records in 2017.
Rolling Stone describes their sound as “…muscular power-pop with hints of psychedelia and stoner-rock…”
There’s a different world out there that awaits you. Buffalo Killers are bringing that world to you.
CAJUN GEMS
While some of you may be aware of Portland’s Joggers, it would not be surprising if you haven’t heard about the band before the band, Cajun Gems. Well, let’s drop some knowledge on you…
Back in 2000, Ben Whitesides and Darrell Bourque decided they wanted to start a band, and with the limited resources they had at the time, tracked and recorded the album Richard Byrd At Little America in their basement. The band hand-screened 100 CD-R’s, self promoted the album, and only played a handful of shows before going on to form Joggers. Now, remixed and remastered by Rob Oberdorfer, Partisan Records is pleased to be reissuing this remarkable, yet largely overlooked full-length album from Cajun Gems in MP3 and Lossless digital formats on December 7th.
“It was recorded so long ago,” Whitesides recently admitted, “and even though a lot of the songs seem pretty rough to me now, I’m happy that they’re out there; it was definitely one of those weird little bubbles of time when life felt jury-rigged and feral and all the more dire and fun for it.”
“[PORTLAND POP PERFECTION] One of the great lost—ahem—gems of Portland music history has finally been recovered. Cajun Gems’ 2001 disc, Richard Byrd at Little America, is nothing short of a basement masterpiece that deserves a place next to Elliott Smith’s Roman Candle, Bugskull’s Phantasies and Senseitions and the Thermals’ More Parts Per Million on the Great Wall of Lo-Fi Portland Musical Achievements. Yes, it’s that good.
The idea of remastering this disc seems almost sacrilegious, as its crunchy, squashed fidelity is almost as integral to the project as its quizzical lyrics and finger-picked guitar lines. But Rob Oberdorfer took lots of care in his update—cranking and clarifying Whitesides’ vocals and widening the stereo channels without losing the dirty, near-perfect heart of the project.” – Casey Jarman / WILLAMETTE WEEK
CAMPER VAN BEETHOVEN
[PRESS RELEASE FOR CVB’S “POPULAR SONGS” ALBUM]
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
CAMPER VAN BEETHOVEN TURNS 25!
CVB’S “POPULAR SONGS” GREATEST HITS CD – FEATURING BOTH ORIGINAL VERSIONS AND NEW RE-RECORDINGS – HITS STORES JUNE 24TH
This June marks not only the 25th anniversary of the influential rock band Camper Van Beethoven, but also, in many ways, indie music itself – a genre that this Santa Cruz-based band unwittingly (or perhaps wittingly) helped spearhead in the early ‘80s long before the terms alternative or indie became common hyphen fodder for the word ‘rock.’
CVB’s current line-up consists of original bandmembers David Lowery (lead vocals / guitar), Jonathan Segel (violin / keys / guitar / vocals), Victor Krummenacher (bass) and Greg Lisher (lead guitar), along with drummer Frank Funaro (Cracker / Joey Ramone / The Dictators).
Popular Songs features eighteen of Camper Van Beethoven’s most beloved genre-mutating tracks that span from their groundbreaking 1985 debut Telephone Free Landslide Victory to their 1989 effort Key Lime Pie. These songs retrace the band’s broad, and often eclectic influences – from punk rock (“Club Med Sucks”) and ska (“Border Ska”) to Eastern European flavored instrumentals (“Skinhead Stomp”) and two-step country (“Sad Lover’s Waltz”) to their own whirling dervish of psychedelic pop (“Circles”). Also included are the early college radio favorites “The Day Lassie Went To The Moon,” “Good Guys & Bad Guys” and, perhaps their most well known number, “Take The Skinheads Bowling,” which is still a staple at alternative, college and rock radio to this day. Fans of Michael Moore’s controversial 2002 film Bowling For Columbine are also surely familiar with this track as Teenage Fanclub’s version of it was featured as the movie’s title track.
This collection also features five songs from CVB’s critically acclaimed albums on Virgin Records – 1988’s Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart and 1989’s Key Lime Pie. However, after the band tried to buy back the rights to the original masters for inclusion on Popular Songs, Virgin refused. So CVB have faithfully re-recorded these five tracks for this collection and, in doing so, have not only reclaimed their own music but have given a stiff middle finger to their former label in the process.
CAVE STATES
Cave States is an American indie-band, formed by Chris Grabau, Danny Kathriner and Todd Schnitzer. The St. Louis-based band often interweaves introspective lyrics, orchestral restraint and experimental soundscapes.
Veterans of the St. Louis Americana music community, the three songwriters have led or supported some of the region’s best-known bands including Magnolia Summer, Half Knots, Nadine, Colonel Ford, Wagon and Waterloo. However, Cave States marks their first collaborate partnership.
In 2013, the trio quietly released their first album, The Great Divide, to international acclaim. While Eleven Magazine (St. Louis) stated, “It’s collaboration at its finest… a seamless wave of harmonies punctuated with the squeak and chirp of fingers on strings that never venture into the darkness the band’s name implies.” Americana UK called Divide, “an album to savor and revisit,” while other reviews likened the band’s music to The Jayhawks, Will Oldham and Jason Molina.
In 2016, they released their second album, True Life to more critical praise. The album marked a notable evolution of the band’s sound, while retaining many of the same aesthetics established by their debut. While American Songwriter tagged this evolution as, “Wilco-esque Americana,” No Depression praised the album as “engaging as it is inspired. It would be hard to find a better example of songwriting skills and adept elocutions all combined within the same set of songs.” Americana UK noted the album “rewards the listener over multiple spins… its catch, it’s incisive and it sounds fabulous.”
After the release of True Life, Cave States’ live presence evolved into a six-piece band. They performed regionally as well as a series of house concerts. However, in 2018 the band retreated back to the studio to work on a new album. While the process has taken over three years, Cave States is poised to reemerge in 2020 with a new collection of songs. First up is their three-song EP The End Is Around The Corner, including the title track as the first single. The songs were written, recorded and mixed at Schnitzer’s Popscreen Studios.
Written by Kathriner, the title track originated from a songwriting process where he and fellow songwriter Grabau randomly drew from a series of prompts to help kick-start song ideas. Grabau states, “Danny and I will sometimes write prompts on pieces of scrap paper and put them into a cup. He drew the phrase and it resonated with us immediately. We talked about how the absurd concept of ‘the end times’ had an influence on our upbringing and the people around us. We both grew up in semi-rural communities informed by the Book of Revelations. The ‘end of days’ were always just around the corner.”
Kathriner adds, “[the song] seemed gloomy at first so I turned it around and made *ending* about new beginnings. For the record, the song was written well before the current crisis, but it seems now to fit the ongoing situations, be it political, social, economic or even the pandemic. Maybe something good and positive will come from all of this.”
Grabau affirms, “As we are seeing now – with a world filled with uncertainty and some very scary outcomes, we are hoping for a new beginning. Perhaps this uncertain time will give space for a new reality committed to social justice, care and kindness”
The song seams Kathriner’s intimate voice with lilting piano, minimal percussion and staccato strings. Topped off with a chorus of voices provided by guests Joey Dressalaer and Stephanie Stewart, the EP previews an expansive sonic landscape composed of Schnitzer’s baroque experimentalism.
Also included in the EP are the songs “Onions and Apples” and “Don’t You Wish It Were True.” Look for more music by Cave States to come in late 2020.
Cave States new three-song EP The End Is Around The Corner is out now on all digital and streaming platforms.
PRESS RELEASE FOR CAVE STATES 2016 ALBUM TRUE LIFE
Cave States is a band from St. Louis, MO and is a collaboration between songwriters, Chris Grabau, Danny Kathriner and Todd Schnitzer.  The band’s name is inspired largely by a nickname given to the state of Missouri and Plato’s Allegory of the Cave.
For over 20 years, the members of Cave States have led or supported a number of well known St. Louis bands including Magnolia Summer, Half Knots, Nadine, Colonel Ford, Wagon and Waterloo; however, Cave States is their first songwriting collaboration.
This spring they’ll be releasing the follow-up to their acclaimed 2013 debut effort, The Great Divide, entitled, True Life.  The new album employs a decidedly more elaborate approach to composition while retaining many of the same aesthetics established in their first LP.
“This is the first album we can call a true studio album,” Grabau explains.  “Although Danny and I would bring in demos and song ideas, the songs were completed while working with Todd in his studio.  Most of what you hear on the final album started with the three of us playing around a couple of microphones.  This is the most collaborative batch of recordings we have done to date.”
The 10 original songs written for True Life pull away from the folkier tendencies found on their first record. The opening track, “Commuter,” is a wry reflection set to a backdrop of mournful pedal steel, while “No Words” is set to an insurgent pulse reminiscent of Good Earth-era Feelies or The Vulgar Boatman.  “In The Dark” is a swirling mantra on humility, whereas the jangly “Over and Done” introduces some of Grabau and Kathriner’s pop sensibilities into the mix.
True Life also features the band’s first recorded cover song – Badfinger’s “Take It All.”  Grabau adds, “Danny and I were hanging out one night playing covers and he brought up the song. I fell in love with it immediately.  We recorded the song live to a drum machine with Danny playing Wurlitzer.  We weren’t planning on including a cover song, but we love how the recording turned out and felt that it fit perfectly with the general themes and aesthetics present on this album.”
Thematically, Kathriner and Grabau found themselves a bit surprised about topics related to life and death kept appearing in their songwriting. Grabau explains, “I think mortality looms large over this batch of songs, which was something we first discovered only after listening to them as a collection.  While that was a bit of a surprise for us, I don’t think of this as a downer album.  I think of True Life as a snapshot of experiences that embody our lives—the mundane and beautiful moments, the feelings of love, regret, sadness, and endurance.  All of these moments have their place. And, that realization was a bit cathartic.  Perhaps we found a little sense of grace that may translate when listening.”
Cave State’s True Life will be self-released on CD and digital formats April 29th.
CHARLES ELLSWORTH
AMERICANA SINGER-SONGWRITER CHARLES ELLSWORTH TO RELEASE HIS NEW STUDIO ALBUM HONEYSUCKLE SUMMER MARCH 5TH, 2021
Brooklyn transplant (by way of the White Mountains of Arizona) Charles Ellsworth will be releasing his latest studio album Honeysuckle Summer on March 5th 2021. Just as the pandemic was taking seed around the country earlier this year, the singer-songwriter managed to recruit several musicians from the Brooklyn music scene – including Jared Schapker (Grandpa Jack) and Blake Suben (Dirty Bird) — to help him record this album with producer Joe Reinhart (Hop Along, Algernon Cadwallader) at his Headroom Studio in Philadelphia.
Honeysuckle Summer is Ellsworth’s demonstration of coming full circle — telling his “whole story so far.” In working to overcome his own traumas, through self-exploration and new-found sobriety, he became acutely aware of how all of the minutia one experiences throughout life add up to an eventual person and how we have a choice on what to do with them. If not addressed, they can create problematic patterns that carry through life or we can embrace the good and do the work to overcome the bad.
As is the case with any songwriter, much of Ellsworth’s past work has drawn from his own past experiences. At face level, this album seems to be no different. However, Honeysuckle Summer addresses the many parts of his youth that he previously has been unable or unready to talk about. In early childhood, Ellsworth’s father was abusive. Physically, mentally, and sexually, and as the oldest boy, he was often the target of his heavy hand. When Ellsworth was just 12, his father was sentenced to twelve years in prison — turning the family’s life upside down. This album is about Ellsworth finally coming to grips with the extent of his own trauma and his journey from a suicidal rock bottom to a place of health and contentment he’d not previously known — which allowed him to open up and finally be able to tell these stories.
The coming full circle theme is also evident in his sound. It’s been a slow progression with a lot of little shifts to reach his current sound. Charles grew up on Mormon hymns and Top 40 country, but later rejected that as a teen, opting for classic and alternative rock. Most of his early solo music was indie folk, but more recently (his 2017 LP Cesaréa, recent singles, and new record), he’s finally embraced his Americana roots and settled comfortably into a new alt-country sound in the vein of Jason Isbell and Sturgill Simpson — which is where the music on this album falls.
Charles Ellsworth’s new studio album Honeysuckle Summer will be available on vinyl, CD and digital/streaming platforms March 5th 2021 via Burro Borracho Records.
CHARLIE WHITEHEAD
“Charlie Whitehead is the greatest unknown soul artist of all time.” – OFFBEAT
Charlie Whitehead, a.k.a. Raw Spitt, 1970 first full length, produced by Swamp Dogg for Canyon records, and a highly sought after collectors’ album of unconventional Southern Soul. The remastered CD version includes 5 bonus tracks and new liner notes penned by Swamp Dogg. This will also be available in Limited Edition Colored Vinyl exclusive to Bomp-mailorder.
The following are Swamp Dogg’s newly penned liner notes for Charlie Whitehead’s Raw Spitt album:
Top Ten on my very best friends list. Charlie Whitehead a/k/a Raw Spitt hails from Smithfield, Virginia; about thirty miles from my hometown, Portsmouth, Virginia. Nevertheless, we didn’t meet until 1966 in New York City. I was knocked out by his voice and delivery so I immediately got Musicor Records, who I was working for, to sign him. We cut one single, “How Can I Forget” b/w “Story Of Mr. Pitiful”, which was not unusual in those days. If you didn’t hit the first time out, your ass was grass and Broadway was the lawnmower.
Charlie was doing well financially with his singing partner, Joe Pond, making frequent trips to Europe as Sam & Dave and alone as Ben E. King. In the meantime I signed with Canyon Records and had plans of Charlie being the other Swamp Dogg; that’s why the two “t’s” in Spitt.  Upon release the album started getting play on underground stations, but Canyon went belly-up before sales could be realized. Charlie was on the FTA Tour with Jane Fonda, Dick Gregory, Peter Boyle, Donald Sutherland and I. I signed Charlie to United Artist but that didn’t last long. Just a single and they gave me the album back. Charlie’s contract called for two albums a year, so they had to pay us for the non-existing album. This gave credence to the axioms, “there’s some dumb motherfu**ers in this industry” and “money don’t make you smart.”
We hit it big together in 1974 on Island Records with “Love Being Your Fool.” which was also covered by the Staple Singers, Jerry Reed, Coon Elder Band, Travis Womack (top 20 pop) and a few others. Charlie came to me with most of the lyrics and thought they were sh*t and I was not going to record it. He told me that he had adhered to every song and concept that I had suggested, without any success. He was right, so I swallowed my fu**in’ ego and let him have his day in court. He was right and I was happy to take credit for this genius change of directions. We have a tremendous past together which includes the writing of Dee Dee Warwick’s Grammy nominated “She Didn’t Know (She Kept On Talking)”.
Charlie is in Brooklyn, N.Y., where he’s a recent widower, avid gambler who always wins, and a sometime performer. If I divulge more you won’t buy my autobiography. – Swamp Dogg.
