Album Premiere: Cave States “True Life”
Written By Jack Sentell

For Cave States, patience truly is a virtue. Band members Chris Grabau, Danny Kathriner and Todd Schnitzer had played in a variety of St. Louis groups for over 20 years before finally coming together to release their debut album, The Great Divide, in 2013. Now, Cave States is gearing up to release their second album, True Life. Get an exclusive first listen to the album below, a week before it officially drops on Apr. 29.

True Life – which features nine original songs and a cover of Badfinger’s “Take It All” – sees the band moving away from the folkier sound present on their debut. Album opener “Commuter” is a Wilco-esque Americana number, infused with simple harmonies and light slide-guitar. The song is followed by the uptempo and drum-heavy “No Words,” providing juxtaposition of sound and genre that sets the tone for a record made with a greater focus on collaboration between the band members.

“We started recording demos while finishing mixes for our first record,” says Grabau. “The three of us were just having fun trying out new songs, playing with arrangements, and experimenting with different instruments. Most of the demos ended up as the core for the final versions, once we fleshed out the surrounding arrangements. It wasn’t until we stepped back and listened to the songs together that we discovered they felt like an album in both tone and theme. It quickly became apparent to us that the songs seem to reflect the ‘rush hour of life’ the three of us are living in.”

FLOOD MAGAZINE PREMIERES DANIEL MARTIN MOORE’S NEW VIDEO!

PREMIERE: Daniel Martin Moore and Wussy’s Lisa Walker Cover Hank Williams’s “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry”

In August of 1949, Hank Williams and The Pleasant Valley Boys entered Cincinnati’s Herzog Studio to record “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.” The staggeringly bleak song is arguably Williams’ greatest achievement as a songwriter and a high mark in the history of country music. It’s since been covered by everyone from Townes Van Zandt to Al Green to The Mountain Goats. Terry Bradshaw even managed to chart a version of the song back when he was still a Pittsburgh Steeler (and, it should be noted, The Blonde Bomber managed to acquit himself despite syrupy countrypolitan backing).

So it makes sense that Kentucky folk singer Daniel Martin Moore would choose to cover “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” himself during a recent session at Herzog. Moore, whose Jim James–produced LP Golden Age was released at the end of last year, was joined in the studio by Lisa Walker of the band Wussy. “I think the song’s staying power comes from the imagery and the flow of the lyrics’ meter through the melody,” Moore says. “It’s a masterpiece of a song—so sad, so beautiful.”

We’re proud to be premiering Daniel Martin Moore and Lisa Walker’s take on “I’m So Lonesome I Can Cry,” which you can watch below. You can also catch Moore on the road starting later this week; those dates are below, too.

HUFFINGTON POST PREMIERES CAVE STATES’ NEW SINGLE!

CLICK HERE TO LISTEN TO CAVE STATES’ NEW TRACK “KINGDOM COME” VIA HUFFINGTON POST!

CAVE STATES’ “KINGDOM COME” EXCLUSIVE

According to Cave States’ Chris Grabau…
“One of the best examples of our band’s creative process can be found in the Danny Kathriner penned single, ‘Kingdom Come.’ The song is an example of stark contrasts. Danny’s song is a bit of a rumination over the loss of a loved one. However, instead of composing a song in a sad minor key, we decided to take a more upbeat approach by adding a backdrop of lilting piano and backing vocals—sung by guest Paige Brubeck of Sleepy Kitty. We hope the result is a song that strives to create meaning from two poles; light from dark, life from death; or even perhaps solace from grief.”

True Life will be released on April 29th. More information about the band can be found online here: http://www.cavestatesmusic.com

ALLMUSIC PREMIERES HOLLIS BROWN’S NEW RSD SONG!

CLICK HERE TO LISTEN TO HOLLIS BROWN’S NEW SINGLE “COMPLETED FOOL” VIA ALLMUSIC!

Song Premiere: Hollis Brown, “Completed Fool”
By Chris Steffen

New York’s Hollis Brown continues to deliver their stomping, warm classic rock sound on “Completed Fool,” a track from their upcoming Record Store Day EP, Cluster of Pearls. You might know them from their four-star debut, Ride on the Train, or Hollis Brown Gets Loaded, a track-by-track reimagining of the Velvet Underground’s classic Loaded.

“This is one of the first songs that me and Jon (Bonilla) wrote at the start of our band,” frontman Mike Montali wrote. “We were listening to a lot of The Smiths and hanging in his garage in Queens that we painted all types of colors and hung all these pictures and posters up. The song just kept hanging around and we couldn’t get the feel right for it until now.”

Cluster of Pearls will be released on Record Store Day, April 16, on nifty purple starburst vinyl.

NO DEPRESSION PREMIERES LEFT LANE CRUISER’S NEW RSD TRACK!

CLICK HERE TO LISTEN TO LEFT LANE CRUISER’S NEW SINGLE “BLOODHOUND” VIA NO DEPRESSION!

“Bloodhound” from Left Lane Cruiser’s Upcoming Record Store Day ’16 Release, Beck In Black BY SCOTT ZUPPARDO

It’s safe to say that punk, garage, or deep blues has a bee line to my heart and soul and makes up part of my very being. That said one of the finest purveyors of said sounds, Left Lane Cruiser, who made my favorite record of 2015 Dirty Spliff Blues, has an incomparable anthology of sorts set for Record Store Day 2016 on Saturday, April 16th. Beck In Black, a loving collection of LLC material from the onset line-up of Freddy J IV on the vocals and guitar crunch and Brenn Beck on the boom bap drum kit and blowing some harp – a fleeting piece of envelope pushing Blues to add to your collection alone, if not for only 800 copies on limited edition metallic gold vinyl courtesy of Alive Naturalsound Records, of course. God Bless Record Store Day!

Freddy J IV has this to say on the track “Bloodhound”, which we’re premiering today here at No Depression,

“This tune is about being on the road. Building the route. Beating down the circuits. Knowing where is good and where is bad. From there it weaves in and out of a musical pilgrimage to the North Mississippi Hill Country and the legends who came from that sacred place. It’s called ‘Bloodhound’ because that’s how you gotta be on the road. You gotta sniff it out. Stay fresh on the trail. Never give up and always pay respect to the legends who built the sound.”

And by legends who built that sound, Freddy shouts out heroes and friends alike from the Mississippi Hill Country Blues movement such as Fat Possum greats, RL Burnside, T-Model Ford, and Junior Kimbrough, along with friends CeDell Davis and Cedric Burnside. Get yo’ ass to the table and the record store to get you some on 4/16, without any further politicking, ladies and gentlemen, the previously unreleased “Bloodhound”…

PUREVOLUME PREMIERES LONESOME SHACK’S NEW SINGLE!

CLICK HERE TO LISTEN TO LONESOME SHACK’S HYPNOTIC NEW TRACK “TO THE FLOOR” VIA PUREVOLUME!

PREMIERE: Lonesome Shack — “To The Floor”

Veteran rockers Lonesome Shack are known for their no-frills, dirty blues rock. Their upcoming album, The Switcher, promise to be an ambitious step forward. The band challenged themselves to create a collection that packed the same pulverizing punch as their live show. The result is some of the band’s finest work yet. We’re stoked to premiere the band’s first single, “To the Floor,” from that album. The vibe is dark and a has a distinct roadhouse rock vibe, that can only be satisfied with a cold beer. Pacing steadily, but uneasy, “To the Floor” will leave you wondering what the band has in-store next.

“This is the first song of the album and I think it sets the tone well,” singer Ben Todd says. “It’s a good struttin’ groove, with one main riff moving it along. The bottle drop you hear at the beginning is a ritual on all of our records. This song is about dancing and there’s not much more to say. Thanks for listening!”

Lonesome Shack’s The Switcher will be released on June 24 via Double Vinyl.

POPMATTERS PREMIERES SULFUR CITY’S NEW SINGLE “WHISPERS”!

CLICK HERE TO LISTEN TO SULFUR CITY’S NEW TRACK “WHISPERS” VIA POPMATTERS!

Sulfur City – “Whispers” (audio) (premiere)

Canadian rock band Sulfur City‘s new album features frontwoman Lori Paradis enjoying a bit of musical ecstasy, an image that evokes a Janis Joplin LP cover. It’s a clever strategy in making that connection as it highlight the band’s greatest asset, their superlative lead vocalist. Thing is, Sulfur City really are a rawk band, not blues/soul band, so Grace Slick is really a better comparison point as Paradis shares Slick’s graceful enunciation and more restrained sense of energy and drama. Did I mention this is a serious rock and roll record, something that’s vanishing faster than bees these days? Sulfur City is a really honest to goodness working class rock band, the kind you can unwind to with beers and poll games at the local pub. Paradis even possesses the requisite career history as she’s been a construction worker, house painter and trucker. Those are careers that make you tough and give you the right rock ‘n’ roll mindset.

Sulfur City’s new album, Talking Loud, releases May 27th via Alive Naturalsound Records and today we’re sharing the band’s new single, “Whispers”, with you. Paradis says, “I was at a funeral and witnessed that even in death we lie. This fascinated me. In writing ‘Whispers’, I wanted to poke, shake, disturb and scream at the illusions of caring and love by friends and family after someone passes.”
