Datura4 Proves ‘Blessed Is the Boogie’ With New Album’s Title Track: Premiere
by Gary Graff

Dom Mariani says the goal for his third Datura4 album was “to just keep improving, really.” And the veteran Australian rocker can certain make that case for Blessed Is the Boogie, whose title track is premiering exclusively below.

“I think the third album in we’re probably starting to get a bit more momentum, songwriting-wise,” Mariani tells Billboard. “I approach it song by song; I don’t say, ‘We’re just gonna go down there and play boogie.’ For me it’s about songs — as long as there’s a riff or a melody that kind of makes us feel good, that’s how we work. We don’t have a preconceived idea of how we want to sound or how a song should sound. These songs really just come and we just enjoy putting them together. We have broad, very eclectic kinds of tastes in this band.”

That’s certainly borne out in Datura4, a quartet Mariani formed around 2014, following tenures with bands such as the Go-Starts, the Stems, the Someloves, DM3 and others, as well as three solo albums. Blessed Is the Boogie certainly wears the group’s debt to John Lee Hooker and other boogie masters proudly on its sleeve. But tracks such as “Not For Me” and “Cat on a Roof” are more expansive and compositionally ambitious, while the acoustic-flavored “City of Lights” hews toward some of Mariani’s power-pop background.

“I think we hinted at the end of the second album (2016’s Hairy Mountain) that we were going in that kind of direction,” Mariani notes. “Some songs are definitely a progression, I guess. The keyboard came into play and that sort of expanded the sound as well.”

Mariani is still happy to celebrate boogie, though, as the title track bears out. “We dig the forefathers of that thing — Canned Heat and John Lee Hooker and ZZ Top were influences on me as a young guy, getting into music,” he says. “There were a couple of bands doing it here in Australia in the early ’70s, too, one called Carson and another, Band of Life. I used to check them out when I was a kid and really dug that kind of groove and it just infiltrated my style. (Datura4) has really let me dig into that.” [CLICK HERE TO READ MORE]

THE BOX SET

This career spanning retrospective box marks the first time that all five of the band’s albums for Geffen/Mute have been collected in one complete box set. The box set features expanded double black vinyl of each album (10 vinyl LPs in all), with several bonus tracks and hard to find 12” mixes – all carefully curated and remastered by Pylon Records. The original artwork has also been expanded into gatefold sleeves, with embossing and spot UV finish. It also contains a large size booklet with liner notes by the band’s co-founders Douglas McCarthy and Bon Harris, along with unseen photos, flyers and artwork, detailing their entire career in chronological order from Essex to Los Angeles. These albums have been out-of-print since the early ’90s and have never been reissued prior to this.

The actual two-piece box is made of hard board stock, wrapped with leather paper and the UV design is hot foiled stamped. The box also has accommodated extra space inside for their first self-released album, Basic Pain Procedure, from 1983 and their last release, Industrial Complex, from 2010, to complete the collection by the fans, as these titles have been in print in recent years.

There will be a limited colored vinyl edition of the box, which will also include a re-press of the band’s debut album, Basic Pain Procedure, available only from the Pylon Records website for a short period of time. The Industrial Complex vinyl has been in print in the last several years on colored vinyl, and easily attainable on many online and fine record stores around the world.

GLIDE MAGAZINE PREMIERES VICTOR KRUMMENACHER’S NEW TRACK “BLUE PACIFIC”

SONG PREMIERE: CAMPER VAN BEETHOVEN’S VICTOR KRUMMENACHER GOES FOR 70S COUNTRY ROCK SOUND WITH “BLUE PACIFIC”

Next spring Victor Krummenacher will be releasing his latest album, Blue Pacific (out March 1st, 2019). This will mark his ninth solo effort away from his two co-founding bands – the pioneering indie-rock group Camper Van Beethoven and the art-rock collective, Monks of Doom. The inception of this emotionally-charged project started nearly a year after his divorce, and, as it turns out, it’s one-part exorcism and one-part an effort to heal and put it all behind him.

Despite the fact this record was a direct result of so much pain, heartache and hurdles, musically it turns out to be one of Krummenacher’s most rewarding efforts of his lengthy career – be it solo, or with his other bands. From beautifully reflective numbers such as “No One Left To Remember, No One Left To Tell,” “Skin & Bones” and “Nowhere Out There On The Line” to the sturdier, high-energy tracks like “The Prettiest Train,” “Some Time Ago,” “Lawrence in the Desert” and the infectious title track, this is an album that satisfies on so many levels. Throughout this sprawling effort, Krummenacher channels a number of the musicians and bands that have influenced him over the years, such as The Stones, The Dead, The E Street Band, Elvis Costello, The Flying Burrito Brothers and, perhaps more than any other, Pete Townshend.

Today Glide is excited to premiere the title track off Blue Pacific. Dropping in with a catchy guitar and bass hook, Krummenacher seems to have an airy resilience in his voice as he sings “Blue Pacific call my mind”. The song brings to mind the West Coast country rock style of groups like the Byrds and Poco as the chorus lingers and beckons the listener to soak up some sunshine and sing along. There is definitely a 70s rock sound to the song, and Krummenacher turns things up with a faster groove and an eruption of soloing and harmonies that drive the lyrics home.

THE VINYL DISTRICT PREMIERES VICTOR KRUMMENACHER’S NEW TRACK “SKIN & BONES”

TVD Premiere: Victor Krummenacher, “Skin & Bones”
BY ROGER CATLIN

In addition to his work in Camper Van Beethoven, Monks of Doom, and Camper Van Chadbourne over more than three decades, bassist Victor Krummenacher has managed to put out eight solo albums since 1995 as well.

His ninth, Blue Pacific, will be issued March 1 on Veritas Recordings and we’re proud to be able to debut one of its standout tracks here today at The Vinyl District, the moody and guitar-layered “Skin & Bones.” It comes from one of those albums that comes after a divorce, and Krummenacher says, it’s “one of the most personal cuts on Blue Pacific.”

“There’s nothing invented in it, it’s really just a mediation on being at a crossroads, knowing everything has changed and working on accepting that change, taking responsibility for what you can of whatever went wrong and walking away from the rest of it.” [CLICK HERE TO READ MORE]

THE VINYL DISTRICT PREMIERES HOLIDAY GUNFIRE’S NEW SINGLE “FALLING DOWN”

Click here to check out Holiday Gunfire’s new track “Falling Down” via The Vinyl District.

TVD Premiere: Holiday Gunfire – “Falling Down”
BY ROGER CATLIN

What if Hüsker Dü came from the deep south instead of the frozen north? It’d probably sound a lot like Holiday Gunfire, the Birmingham, AL, band of rock veterans whose ringing barrage of guitars and unerring bottom serve to encase melodic turns in seething vocals.

Guitarist Lester Nuby III, a noted producer who was also part of Verbena, churns up the trebly guitar and provides a yearning vocal drone not dissimilar to the kind Bob Mould did in Minnesota. Sparks fly in Nuby’s guitar interplay with Jason Hamric, formerly of Twinside (and a force behind Birmingham’s underground radio station).

Behind them bassist Craig Ceravolo, once of Great Lakes and drummer Michael Williams, who played in 13 Ghosts and Nowhere Squares, balance all that treble with a solid and shattering bottom end.

Holiday Gunfire’s self-titled debut won’t come out until February 15 on Cornelius Chapel Records, but The Vinyl District is proud to premiere today on the site one of its gems, “Falling Down,” which caps the collection’s eight tracks.

There may be grey in the beards and temples of Holiday Gunfire, but that only reflects some experience and acquired smarts that may open the ears of listeners far and wide to the kind of talent that has been brewing in Birmingham (a place that is also about 40 degrees warmer than Minneapolis as I write this).

Holiday Gunfire’s self-titled album arrives in stores on February 15th via Cornelius Chapel Records—on vinyl.
