RADIO MOSCOW TO RELEASE NEW “MAGICAL DIRT” ALBUM JUNE 17!

PSYCH-ROCK MERCHANTS HIT THE ROAD APRIL 15TH FOR MASSIVE EUROPEAN TOUR!

RADIO MOSCOW SHARES THEIR FIRST SINGLE “DEATH OF A QUEEN” FROM “MAGICAL DIRT.” CLICK HERE TO LISTEN & SHARE!

On June 17th Radio Moscow will release their fourth studio album, aptly entitled Magical Dirt. The band’s fountainhead Parker Griggs, along with partners-in-crime Anthony Meier (bass) and Paul Marrone (drums), have cultivated yet another blues-rock masterpiece that crossbreeds late ’60s psych-rock and face-melting guitar histrionics with the foundation-crumbling rhythms from early ’70s hard-rock, and even includes a couple of harrowing tracks built from the bedrock of rural Delta blues. But more than merely digging up fossils from rock’s revered past, Griggs & Co. manage to translate the myths of rock-n-roll’s golden age into modern day truths for a new, younger generation.

Radio Moscow’s Magical Dirt will be available June 17 on CD, mp3 and limited edition hand-mixed starburst vinyl via Alive Naturalsound Records.

“[9 out of 10 stars] A true masterpiece.” – ULTIMATE GUITAR

“Fifty minutes of psyche-rock fireworks…. like spending an evening with Jimi Hendrix, Cream, ZZ Top, Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy and The Black Keys.” – ROLLING STONE

“[4 out of 5 stars] Rippingly badass.” – PREMIERE GUITAR

“Radio Moscow clearly channel the glory days of the power trio (à la Blue Cheer, Cream and Hendrix). These three bump the energy and tempos up to match modern tastes and shred extensively on over-the-top, marathon bluesy freak-outs with first-class precision and a cohesion tighter than the lid on your granny’s jar of pickled eggs.” – NASHVILLE SCENE

“Griggs’ masterful guitar work is spellbinding… we recommend multiple listens at high volume.”  – AUSTIN EXAMINER

“One of the best modern purveyors of retrograde psychedelic blues-rock.” – SAN FRANCISCO WEEKLY

“Californian based band lovingly concoct a Cream/Hendrix inspired album of cosmic blues.  Mainman Parker Griggs is a great guitarist and he’s clearly having a ball…. exhilarating stuff.” – THE DAILY TELEGRAPH – UK

“Psychedelic, acid-laced guitar-based rock that will shake you to your soul.” – MUSIC SAVAGE

“A bona fide blues-meets-psych-rock staple.”- SALT LAKE CITY WEEKLY

“The band has a style and rhythm reminiscent of Blue Cheer and MC5, but with—believe it or not—more impressive guitar work. For those desiring music with layers, Radio Moscow is every bit as bluesy as it is early garage.” – SANTA FE REPORTER

“Do you pine for psychedelic blues rock in the vein of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Blue Cheer, and the MC5? Ames, Iowa’s Radio Moscow possess big, fuzzy riffs, a drummer who makes the full use of his toms, and a vocalist who may or may not have time traveled here from the Summer of Love. This is some sprawling stuff and all expertly executed. A rock blowout.” – THE STRANGER: SEATTLE

JOHN THE CONQUEROR TO RELEASE SOPHOMORE ALBUM THE GOOD LIFE ON FEB. 25TH THROUGH ALIVE NATURALSOUND RECORDS!

PHILLY-BASED BLUES-ROCK TRIO TO EMBARK ON EUROPEAN WINTER TOUR FOLLOWED BY U.S. DATES IN THE SPRING

“I’m a blues man; all I got are stories,” admits John The Conqueror‘s singer-songwriter Pierre Moore. And not unlike many blues greats before him, the stories that fill out the Philly-based trio’s second full-length studio effort, The Good Life, are based on Moore’s own personal experiences that span from his Mississippi youth to his current life – much of it spent on the road.

“When I started this album,” Moore said, “I completely devoted myself to becoming a better writer.” And after witnessing these 11 impassioned, often explosive tracks, Moore’s decision to focus on his art paid off with well-crafted songs of truth, clarity and power. All of the compositions were penned by Moore except for their swaggering take on Randy Newman’s “Let’s Burn Down The Cornfield.” Building on the soulful blues-rock foundation of their acclaimed 2012 self-titled debut, The Good Life moves forward with both Moore’s own life experiences turned to song, and the tight-but-loose rhythms of drummer Michael Gardner & bassist Ryan Lynn as well as Moore’s own snaky, sinewy guitar leads.

While John The Conqueror follows the path laid down for decades by like-minded bluesmen who ‘told it like it was,’ on The Good Life Moore and co. have also updated the blues idiom for a new generation – melding hard truths with hard-ass blues-rock.

John The Conqueror’s The Good Life will be available on CD, digital formats and limited edition vinyl on February 25th through Alive Naturalsound Records.

HERE’S WHAT PEOPLE HAVE BEEN SAYING ABOUT JOHN THE CONQUEROR:

“John the Conqueror’s raw, bluesy old-school soul track “Time To Go” is just one of many gems on the Philadelphia trio’s self-titled debut album.” – USA TODAY

Sounds like the work of a supergroup power trio made up of three vets who just wanted to get together and lay it down, making gutsy, raw, bluesy music for the sheer joy of it. The fact that this is the first time in a studio for the members of this band is mind-blowing. –  JAMBANDS/RELIX

“Heavily influenced by blues musicians that Moore and Gardner grew up with in Jackson, MS, John The Conqueror provide a raw, honest edge that truly sets them apart from other bands. It doesn’t matter if they’re jamming hard or slowing things down, there’s so much soul you simply feel throughout the album. I’d say for a debut, this is pretty damn impressive.” – 215 MAGAZINE

“Power trio John the Conqueror has made a splash in Philly scene over the past year, dishing out a moving blend of blues, soul and rock n’ roll… The swaggery trio might be Philly’s answer to Gary Clark Jr.” – WXPN’s THE KEY

“A fine punk-blues rock record that sounds like The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion if JSBX were from the Mississippi Delta. It’s all smokestacks, greasy ball bearings, mudslides, and corn liquor swilled from mason jars; raggedly scorching guitar riffs, a thunderous rhythm section, and howled vocals. A hell of an impressive debut.”  – HAPPENING! MAGAZINE

“This self-titled debut album from Philadelphia trio John the Conqueror is a solid output of blues and rock n’ roll.  The vocals and guitar playing of Pierre Moore are impressive in their own right, but along with bassist Ryan Lynn and drummer Michael Gardner, the band’s sound really grooves together nicely. It’s not really fair to compare these guys with veteran groups like the Black Keys or the White Stripes, but John the Conqueror prove on their first album that they have noteworthy chops.” – SLUG MAGAZINE

“The trio from Mississippi, now based in Philly, have the smoothness of classic ’50s soul mixed with a southern twang. Named after an African-American mythological folk legend, of whom the likes of Dr. John, Muddy Waters, and Willie Dixon have sung, the band possesses a magical power that empowers emotion.”  – KNUCKLE RUMBLER

“Leader Pierre Moore has a matter-of-fact singing voice, tasteful six-string skills and a tuneful writing style that balances licks & melody and avoids classic rock overload.”  – THE BIG TAKEOVER

“Powerful blues with a soulful edge.”  – VANGUARD ONLINE

“They will bring you from the church to the juke joint in four quick minutes.” – MADD CHICAGO

“John the Conqueror’s trademark sound is based around laid back, loose funky blues riffs, laconic drumming, and succinct song writing that takes less than a minute to fall in love with.” – SKRBBLR

“John The Conqueror are an amazing young band on the verge of greatness.. Born in the Delta of Mississippi, and currently based in Philadelphia, the trio blends a totally unique mix of blues and rock, with equal amounts of Robert Johnson and Queens of the Stone Age.” – BLOG TALK RADIO

“John The Conqueror has released a solid debut that’s steeped in Mississippi Delta, juke joints and a penchant for vintage soul.” – J Felton / RECORD DEPT.

“Like a grainy, saturated film image of Otis Redding, John The Conqueror ooze a classic soul vibe.” – JESTER JAY MUSIC

“Is there a category of music called Hard-Arse Soul? J the C has nailed it. The 10 tracks here bristle with surly attitude that I’m told living in the City of Brotherly Love can bring on. Pierre Moore’s smoothly assured vocal echoes with a tinge of menace. Bass-man Ryan Lynn is the local guy who lays down a fine and fluid rumble, while Pierre’s cuzz Michael Gardner delivers the requisite backbeat laden with wrecking ball swing.” – I94 BAR

“If you remember what you’ve always liked about rock music that hews close to the blues and soul traditions, you will be well-disposed to enjoy what John The Conqueror is doing. There’s also a punk influence, best heard on stuff like the fast guitar intro to ‘Say What You Want.’ which is a 2:25 rant that keeps a high energy level throughout.” – WHEN YOU MOTOR AWAY

“John The Conqueror hit the right bluesy rock nerve on their excellent self-titled debut.” – THE FIRE NOTE

“This gritty, sexy, blues-infused rock album is not to be missed.” – LOCAL PLAYLIST: MILWAUKEE

USA TODAY PREMIERES COLLIN HERRING’S NEW TRACK “SOME KNIVES”!

TEXAS SINGER-SONGWRITER COLLIN HERRING TO RELEASE FIFTH ALBUM SOME KNIVES ON MAY 13TH!

CLICK HERE TO LISTEN TO THE PREMIERE OF COLLIN HERRING’S NEW TITLE TRACK “SOME KNIVES” VIA USA TODAY’S POP CANDY!

Some Knives is Collin Herring‘s fifth studio effort, yet it’s his first in nearly five years. “This album has been done for a lot longer than it seems,” the Texas singer-songwriter admits. “Most of the process was coordinating dates and small sessions here and there. Producer and drummer Matt Pence (Centro-matic) was able to hear the demos and the rest was just making it happen. We liked working with Matt and after some discussion about the initial recordings, it was a no brainer that he was going to mix this record as well. We didn’t want anything lost in translation on this project.”

Herring & Pence were joined in the studio with Jeremy Hull on bass and the singer-songwriter’s father, Ben Roi Herring, on keyboards, pedal steel and backing vocals. “I like that the credits on this album are short. I like small groups,” Herring states. “There was no ‘that sounded good’ and then re-recording it at a later date. We all just played our parts.”

One of the underlying influences of the album occurred unintentionally during the sessions. As Herring explains, “During the recording process my Dad got cancer and beat it (Remission). Good surgeon and good cannabis oil. There was a point when Dad was laying down the pedal steel on one of the songs that I had to go outside and take a walk. It was emotional. While he was recording he looked up at me with this look on his face that told me his entire story. A look that said this is for you. This note. All these notes. All these bends. Everything that’s weaving around. This is life and it’s not over yet. Thank goodness.”

“We kept the health stuff to ourselves but I’d be lying if I didn’t say it had some impact. Most of the recording was done when we found out but I still feel like, every now and then, that some of the emotional shadows crept onto the recordings.”

Some Knives is, in fact, an emotional ride, yet it’s a beautiful trip not only shrouded with dark corners, doubt and fear, but also dappled with light and a shimmering sense of hope throughout. These 11 moving tracks, that stylistically traverse through rock, alt.country and even touches of psychedelia, should prove what regional Texas press has already been hailing as both “the torchbearer for alt.country” and “the next big thing.”

Collin Herring’s Some Knives will be available on CD & digital formats on May 13th. Spring/summer U.S tour dates to be announced soon.

HERE’S WHAT PEOPLE HAVE BEEN SAYING ABOUT COLLIN HERRING:

[Song Premiere: Collin Herring’s “Some Knives”] “The Texas-based singer-songwriter crafts intimate, country-tinged tunes that remind me of some of my favorite bands, like Son Volt and Whiskeytown. Close your eyes and open your ears to this track, and may you be temporarily transported … (And seriously, how great is this song? I’ve heard it about a dozen times already and that’s still not enough!)” – Whitney Matheson / USA TODAY: POP CANDY

“… a phenomenal album that melds the alt-country and power pop genres with captivating ease. Herring’s songs can be utterly heartbreaking and poetic even when he’s banging the hell out of his guitar.” – DALLAS OBSERVER

“… electric-honed alt.country in the vein of Son Volt.” – THE AUSTIN CHRONICLE

“If you are a fan of Matthew Ryan, then adding Herring’s work to your collection is a must. His poetry, robed in rock with a slight spark of twang continues to be an impressive combination.” – TWANGVILLE

“On Herring’s fourth album, Ocho, the Austin singer/songwriter assembles an eight-song set that often bristles with the Roots/Rock Americana of his first three discs while incorporating more of the kind of atmospheric texturalism found in the wheelhouse of Tom Waits and Chuck Prophet. Herring’s plaintive and tremulous vocal style and disquieting lyrical honesty puts him in proximity to Ryan Adams, Freedy Johnston and Chris Whitley, especially when he goes full bore electric. But when he applies those same gifts in an acoustic Folk direction, there’s a haunted, ethereal quality to the songs reminiscent of Elvis Costello’s collaborations with T-Bone Burnett. And in a lot of cases, the cumulative results are Herring’s distinctive sonic fingerprint, giving the clear impression that he’s well on his way to establishing the kind of broad, expansive and unique range that Neil Young has successfully cultivated for the past four decades.” – CINCINNATI CITY BEAT

THE A.V. CLUB PREMIERES HOLLIS BROWN’S VERSION OF THE VELVET UNDERGROUND’S “I FOUND A REASON”!

Hollis Brown celebrates The Velvet Underground with a cover of “I Found A Reason”

By Marah Eakin

Hollis Brown likes The Velvet Underground a lot. Maybe not as much as Macaulay Culkin, but a lot. So much, in fact, that the band’s Record Store Day exclusive, Hollis Brown Gets Loaded, finds the Brooklyn group covering all of The Velvets’ 1970 classic LP Loaded all the way through. According to the band’s Mike Montali, “The Velvet Underground’s Loaded was one of the first albums we bonded on when we were first playing together. We got the opportunity to perform the record in full at a Lou Reed Tribute show in New York City after he passed. In the spirit of Record Store Day and the Velvets, we wanted to do something different, so we decided to do our take on one of our favorite albums.”

The record’s not out until April 19, but A.V. Club readers can check out the band’s version of “I Found A Reason” exclusively below and then buy the thing this Record Store Day at their favorite indie record retailer.

“HOLLIS BROWN GETS LOADED” EXCLUSIVE RECORD STORE DAY EXCLUSIVE ALBUM OUT APRIL 19TH!

It started out as live tribute last November. Lenny Kaye, Arto Lindsay, Voidoids’ Ivan Julian and others convened at NYC’s Bowery Electric to pay homage to the late, great Lou Reed. The Queens-based roots-rock band Hollis Brown were also invited to perform the Velvet Underground’s 1970 album Loaded in its entirety.

What began as live memorial to a fallen legend has now been preserved on wax for the ages. Hollis Brown Gets Loaded finds the foursome turning in earthy studio takes on all 10 of perhaps the VU’s most accessible tracks. From the cocky strut of classics such as “Sweet Jane” and “Rock & Roll” to the lovely balladry of “New Age,” “I Found A Reason” and the pile-driving rock of “Head Held High,” Hollis Brown pays tribute to this time-honored album with takes that don’t stray too far from the originals, yet still unfold as beautiful new songs with their own unmistakable rootsy approach. And not unlike the running order of the tracks – which goes from last to first, opening with “Oh! Sweet Nuthin’” and closing with “Who Loves The Sun” – this is one great young NYC rock band putting a refreshing new spin on, arguably, the greatest of NYC rock bands.

Hollis Brown Gets Loaded will be available at independent record stores from coast-to-coast on April 19th as a Record Store Day exclusive on hand-mixed three-color starburst vinyl.

HEAR’S WHAT PEOPLE HAVE BEEN SAYING ABOUT HOLLIS BROWN:

Hollis Brown make music that sounds just as alive today as it would’ve in 1966 and will 40 years from now. – SPIN

Through this consistently impressive first long player, Hollis Brown have carved out their own space with a set of timeless, rustic and eminently tuneful and soulful sounds. – SHINDIG!

It’s easy to see how Hollis Brown’s sound could be as relevant years down the road as it is today. – PASTE

Packed to the brim with sterling songs that measure up to those covers they’re so fond of playing live. – KUT RADIO /AUSTIN

Their well-crafted songs are rooted in the blues and feature pop hooks that sink in and don’t let go. – CMT

“Ride On The Train” is the group’s debut full-length album, and it’s a gem, full of memorable songs and a sharp, taut sound that only includes what is necessary to put the song over. – ALL MUSIC

Everything you’d expect from a band named after a Bob Dylan tune, mixing Americana and Bible Belt blues with a heavy dose of no-frills Southern rock. – AMERICAN SONGWRITER

A bracing mixture of something akin to blues-based Southern rock and pure British Invasion-influenced pop. – WHEN YOU MOTOR AWAY

Like a refined version of the late ’60s era rock and roll that sort of trembles into ’70s rock / folk /country territory. – MUSIC SAVAGE

“Ride On The Train” is an album that a lot of people are going to love for its multi-generational appeal. But besides that, it’s just good rock music. It’s hard to peg a specific sound on it. There are no “skip” songs on this album though. Be prepared to keep it in your player, on repeat, for a long time. – EAR TO THE GROUND

A remarkable debut from a band that shows a lot of promise. – PENNY BLACK MUSIC

Their debut is something to behold. – HEAR YA

GUITAR PLAYER PREMIERES JOHN SIEGER & GREG KOCH’S NEW TRACK “LET ME TRY AGAIN”!

ACCLAIMED SINGER/SONGWRITER JOHN SIEGER TO RELEASE NEW SOLO ALBUM A WALK IN THE PARK WITH GUITARIST GREG KOCH APRIL 1ST!

CLICK HERE TO LISTEN TO THE PREMIERE OF JOHN SIEGER & GREG KOCH’S NEW SONG “LET ME TRY AGAIN” VIA GUITAR PLAYER!

John Sieger leads one of the better resurrections in recent times, the Milwaukee-based band Semi-Twang. They recorded one album for Warner Bros in 1988 and then took a short twenty-year break. Since they reunited in 2009, they have put out two stellar recordings, The Wages Of Sin and last years The Why & The What For. Both have earned superlatives from critics. Sieger’s songs have been covered by Dwight Yoakam, Robbie Fulks, Flaco Jimenez, Jerry Harrison (Talking Heads), The Persuasions and The BoDeans among others. He started writing with guitar virtuoso Greg Koch in the fall of 2012 and they took a break after their 67th song. Ten of these gems appear on Greg’s 2013 album, Plays Well With Others. That album has guest appearances from Paul Barerre (Little Feat), Joe Bonamassa, Robben Ford, Roscoe Beck, John Cleary and Brannen Temple. John and Greg just returned from Europe where they played 18 dates in three weeks, and are now readying the second installment of their studio work together, A Walk In The Park, set for national release on April 1, 2014 via Faux Real.

“Writing songs with Greg Koch happened mostly by accident,” Sieger admitted. “The universe must have demanded it and arranged for him to be loitering outside the Tosa Village Starbucks on a sunny day in September 2012. When he suggested we try this, I asked him why he was trying to end his career. Now I am happy we saw it through. This batch is just scratching the surface of a pile of twisted, beautiful and funny songs that I’m extremely proud of. Hope you like!”
