Song Premiere: Grace Basement – Standing on a Corner
By Corey Flegel

While Grace Basement’s previous effort, Wheel Within a Wheel (2013), saw singer/songwriter Kevin Buckley turning inward with an intimate folk-based sound, their new album Mississippi Nights takes a more bombastic approach inspired by the performances of his longtime rhythm section, drummer Jill Aboussie and bassist Greg Lamb.
The title refers to the atmospheric vibe of the album along with a nod to the beloved downtown St. Louis rock club which hosted untold amounts of great bands until early 2007, when it closed its doors — and was replaced with a casino parking lot.

Mississippi Nights the album is less steeped in nostalgia and more interested in capturing the sound of everyday experiences, with each song taking on a character and narrative of its own. Ten story songs from various perspectives, united by themes of love, loss, hubris and hope with a familiar setting.

At live shows, Buckley is joined by Aboussie, Lamb, guitarist Marc Schneider and a who’s who of other area musical ringers.

A full-time musician based in St. Louis, Buckley is always on call with his fiddle and guitar, performing nearly every night of the week with a variety of bands ranging from Irish music to western swing and country.  When not playing in St. Louis or around the country, Buckley can be found in his home studio, Avonmore, where he writes and records Grace Basement albums, as well as projects by other artists.

Today Paste is premiering Grace Basement’s new track “Standing On A Corner” from their new LP Mississippi Nights out January 19th on CD, digital and streaming formats. Kevin Buckley had this to say about the song,”‘Standing on a Corner’ is a very direct song, musically and lyrically from its Midwestern country rock vibe to the troubled narrator.  This song isn’t necessarily autobiographical, but I do believe anyone who’s every picked up a guitar has felt this way at some point.”

POPMATTERS PREMIERES LEAH CALVERT’S NEW TRACK “WILD THINGS”

Leah Calvert – “Wild Things” (audio) (premiere)
by JEDD BEAUDOIN

“Wild Things” is the new track from Atlanta-based singer-songwriter Leah Calvert’s upcoming debut solo album, Satellite. Some are familiar with Calvert via her work with the Americana outfits the Dappled Grays and the John Driskell Hopkins Band and though one can hear traces of those roots on “Wild Things”, the tune calls on something darker, more mysterious. No matter the emotional or musical terrain she covers during the song, her vocal performance is haunting, ethereal, a reminder of her formidable talents.

One can hear tensions at play within the tune and Calvert offers that the songs is, “a conversation between our internal driver and our external hold backs, our desire to be daring versus others dictating our possibilities.” She adds, “The tune finally settles on an ‘all gas and no brakes’ approach to life and reminds us that freedom is a personal responsibility.”

Satellite is released 12 January 2018 via Vera Hellcat Records.

WY PREMIERE: “EVERYTHING U NO”
Watch the new video from The Prefab Messiahs

The Prefab Messiahs are a post-punk band with actually credibility, considering they formed in 1981 amid the peak of DIY basement guerrilla-style attacks on the status-quo of pop. Fast forward three decades later, with a little help from local heroes Burger Records, and this Boston-based four-piece is releasing an album of brand new material, saturated with years of experience as an “art-damaged psych-pop collective” eager to prove their worth. And they’re proving it pretty hard. Their forthcoming album, Psychsploitation Today, drops January 26th via Lolipop and Burger, and today we’re sharing their new animated video for the single “Everything U No.”

“EVERYTHING U NO (Is Wrong)(Again)… The song is pretty self-explanatory… question authority, question your assumptions, question everything… and even then you’re probably going to be mistaken. The more you think you know the less you really know. Case in point: Just look out the window. But if you shout it loud enough maybe you’ll figure something out. Maybe somebody will figure something out. It’s a heavy guitar riff with toy ray gun accompaniment. That’s how we roll in The Prefab Messiahs.” – The Prefab Messiahs

Sounds sick to us. So press play on the video, let yourself be distracted for a moment, and keep your ears on this band.

Video Premiere: Ampline – “Passion Relapse”

“Steve Mathisen built the video pulling from live photos and the album artwork and some old footage from previous tours. This song is the title track; a weight we felt it could carry as it flexes its muscles and carries our hearts when needed. The lyrics rake the shifting soil of the human condition: ‘What lurks in the void between non-existence and life? Between belief and non-belief? Between love and apathy?’” – Ampline

We’re pleased to bring you the premiere of Ampline’s new music video for their song “Passion Relapse”. The track is taken from the band’s forthcoming album by the same name, which is scheduled to be released through SofaBurn Records on January 26, 2018. You can pre-order the album here.

SONG PREMIERE: LEAH CALVERT SOARS WITH BLUEGRASS HARMONIES AND TIGHT ROOTS ROCK ON “TWO LINES ON A PAGE”

Today Glide is excited to premiere “Two Lines On a Page”, one of the standout songs on Satellite. Opening with a surf rock guitar hook, Calvert’s vocals chime in with an almost angelic sound before launching into soaring bluegrass-esque harmonies. The catchy chorus and tight guitar work complements Calvert’s own vocals, making this an emotionally charged roots rock tune.

Reflecting on the inspiration behind the song, Calvert has this to say:
“Though we appear so close, we’re often just ‘living in parallel.’ We see this in our personal lives and our political climate. The hope of ‘Two Lines’ is that we can find middle ground.”

Leah Calvert’s Satellite will be available on CD, digital and streaming formats on January 12th, 2018. For more music and info visit her on Facebook.
