The Bonnevilles – “The Whiskey Lingers” (audio) (premiere)
by Sarah Zupko
Northern Ireland’s the Bonnevilles are steeped in the blues and they enliven and amp up their sound by playing as a duo with Andrew McGibbon Jr. on vocals and guitar and Chris McMullan on drums. It’s a formation that has paid off in spades for both the White Stripes and the Black Keys and the Bonnevilles carry on that tradition of stripped down, blues rock run through with headbanging punk energy. It’s made the Bonnevilles a huge favorite on the European blues circuit and now the band has their third album, Arrow Pierce My Heart, on tap ahead of the summer festival season.
The group tells PopMatters that “‘The Whiskey Lingers’ is a song about waiting for revenge. In Ireland we have a saying ‘long runs the fox’, it means be patient and you get what’s due to you. When we recorded it I got to use an original Maestro fuzz pedal that was lying in a drawer in the studio, Mike didn’t even know if worked. It did and it sounded fantastic.”
